TB ruins your plains even if you don't have it, just the fear of it is enough to force you to do things you wouldn't otherwise doAnd if I'm running 4-500 cattle all at grass that all need testing in June? And I go down on that test, they then have to be done again in August.......again in October...... It's a risk I have to take with the breeding cattle but not one I'm taking with the stores. The AFU allows me to finish my own calves even when shut down, but once they're in, they're in. I'd be foolish not to build it into my business plan.
Why will the farm be dead? Plenty of arable farms round here with no stock, just using break crops....I’ll just finish bulls

You don’t need to tell me, I’m a stock farmer, I have absolutely no interest in going arable....I have good sheds and handling facilities so 6 monthly TB testing wouldn’t be so much of a problem....every 60 days would ruin keeping cattle for me, the stock would get stressed I’d get stressed and it would be a pain....I realise I’m very fortunate farming where I do (for now)Yes plenty of farms without cattle.
They are dead to me, I would have no interest. And the fertility of the land being steadily mined and sold off. Long term a farm without stock is the road to nowhere.
Look at the Eastern counties with declining fertility, increasing grass weed problems, capital once kept safe in cattle eroded away on shiny metal, where do they go now? Sell up to the vacuum man until there is only one farm left. I find it incredibly depressing.
Pre movement testing 20 today ready for Monday. Its a pain in the arse every time you want to sell something. Vet reckons we should be back on 4 year test by Feb.You don’t need to tell me, I’m a stock farmer, I have absolutely no interest in going arable....I have good sheds and handling facilities so 6 monthly TB testing wouldn’t be so much of a problem....every 60 days would ruin keeping cattle for me, the stock would get stressed I’d get stressed and it would be a pain....I realise I’m very fortunate farming where I do (for now)

Plenty of bulls bullocks and heifers out there only needing 90 days finishing, it’s all the majority of mine getI don’t know how long you regard as short keep but there aren’t many bulls out there to buy you don’t end up keeping for 6 months minimum so that’s all summer inside in my book which is what you were saying you wouldn’t do.

Yea but he makes them 800 kilosNot bulls which is what you originally said. Next time you’re in Darlington ask John B how long his bulls average on farm. He buys strong bulls, I think you will get a surprise
