Only for the very top end calves, anything that is an improver is better ran on.
we have run on a couple of not so good ones and seen a good return on it , some that don't quite look the part at ten months look bloody good run on for six months or more
the only problem is the cost of pre movement testing stops you selling when you want, tb costs lots of money even if you have never had it

Thanks. So approx 10-15p/kg behind mainland UK. Is there a lot of cattle about in NI or is it southern Ireland.

Supplies of clean cattle are pretty steady in Northern Ireland, cull cows seemed to have dropped off a bit with milk prices improving. I'd dread to think what prices would be if the Euro was weaker.

Supplies in ROI are forecast to be stronger again this year than last year (which was stronger than 2015 as well), but the Irish Farmers' Journal would be reporting that finished cattle are tight enough at present. I think base quotes for R grade cattle are about 305-310p/kg. They've had the benefit of a weak Euro for a few years which has helped them but now that has turned against them they're have a more difficult time. On the positive they have recently agreed a beef export deal with Egypt. I'm not old enough to remember but they say Egypt was a big market for Irish beef pre BSE

Their base price is the same over 400 just an extra 5p under (which is basically a bonus)

Cant see them paying 5pk more than anyone else just for the sake of it or for the long term either, clearly they want lighter cattle and offering a carrot rather than a stick to try and get producers to supple them lighter, if you look at the size of their steaks etc on the shelve they are getting smaller and smaller all the time.

Of course they could set their base price 5pk less than anyone else.
