KIRKBY STEPHEN PRIME SHEEP SALE - TUESDAY 19TH MARCH
Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep last night when an entry of 5,141 sheep were forward consisting of 4,090 prime hoggs and 1,051 cast sheep.
Topping the prime hoggs at £127 and 334.2p per kilo was a 38 kilo Beltex cross hogg from Moir Livestock, Aberdeenshire. Messrs Tustian, Banbury sold a pen of 17 Beltex cross hoggs weighing 42 kilos and making £124.30 (296p per kilo) with another pen of 15, 43 kilo hoggs selling for £123.30 also from this home. The consignment of 230 Continental cross hoggs from Messrs Tustian, Banbury averaged 47 kilos £104.55 (222.4p per kilo).
Smart Continental cross hoggs were in extreme demand and were a flying trade with over 35 pens selling between 250-334p per kilo and over 70 pens selling between £100-£127.
Swaledale hoggs sold to £86.80 for a pen of 15 from Messrs Graham, Brechin with another pen of 35, 43 kilo Swaledale’s from this home selling for £81.80 (190.2p per kilo). Mule hoggs topped at £92 for a pen of 11 from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Distington.
Cast sheep topped at £142.50 for a pen of 8 Texel cross ewes from Ayrshire. This consignment of 200 mainly Suffolk and some Texel cross ewes sold to average £106.66.

That’s a long trek for Tustians!:eek: I guess they wouldn’t be long getting the lorry on the M40 though, then just 4(?) hours up the motorway?

A friend of mine who is a bit of a hobby farmer sent some fat lambs today to a market, he sold them as farm assured, but it turns out his fa ran out. He told me the market rang him to say he would be docked "£1 a head" did he hear them right or will it be £1 a kilo?

Cattle are £1 kilo so I expect sheep are the same
