It appears that many have left early and there are a lot of apples that are struggling to get picked. Some soft fruit farms had to abandon good crops due to lack of staff.
Our abattoirs will grind to a halt without the Eastern Europeans, but perhaps all the Brexit people or the Extinction Rebellion lot will get stuck in and help out to make sure we leave on 31st October!

Project fear rubbish.

If you cant find staff then 1 : your not paying enough and 2 : the conditions are sh!t for the job/wage!

If slaughter lines cannot find staff they need to increase wages and pass these extra wage costs UP the line and NOT backwards to farmer suppliers!

I am afraid Werzle you had better get a job picking apples. It is not too bad at least it is mostly clean and regular hours. If you are a good picker you can earn £100 a day without any trouble. You might even get put up in a nice caravan with all mod cons for a very reasonable price. You might have a shop on site but it might only be selling Polish or other East european food.

In Kent huge areas are now being planted with new varieties of apples and as the crop this year is down the price is very good. However the industry relies on casual labour to pick this fruit. These people have for many years come from the EU.
There is a saying that the further East you go the faster the hand to eye movement becomes. Meaning that the poorer and hungrier people tend to pick more quickly!
Just wondering how this would equate nett. Average farmer must work 280 full days including paper work random half hour checks minimum. So at 100 a day 28000 . Those that gain payments must average 20000 though appreciated large estates distorts the average. Then letting land at below value if owned would very roughly return on average statistics of farm sizes around 60000. Wonder what % farmers get that. My accountant has 250 farmers on books. 8 showed profit from last Sept to this Sept though does depend greatly how you distribute your payments

Back on topic. Dunbia on 3.15 for cattle this week. Have some B+W to go. Had 5 in ABP last week, but only one made a o+ recon at least two would have at dunbia as they had good cover and more Frisian. Anyone have a contact in the procurement office at linden in the north east? Always thought they did well in there.

More over fat lambs in today than under finished, some had serious cover in them, still sold ok mind. Best price of the day was £59 for 34kg Shetland x beltex lambs. Bet they won’t get killed mind
My 47.5kg Mules made £72 better than last week but still sh!t when they’ve been on feed for a month. Be interesting to see how the ones I sent dead weight compare when I get the grades tomorrow
Well @muleman the ones I sent to Kepak did ok and def better than live weight, they would average 42kg at home and made £68.50 a head. Reasonabley happy, one was a bit to good and one was an O, weights ranged from 18 to 21 so on par with Dunbia I thought

Anything dairy bred is better off at Dunbia IMO. The automatic grader at ABP seems to do well on suckler bred but is hard on dairy bred. Maybe the settings need adjusted if that is possible.
