Silly prices are boom and bust...£5 kilo is fine but any higher and folk will switch...I want high prices but one has to be sensible..does any one agree?

What other industry other than farming would talk down their prices like above??

Utter madness and MUST stop!!

£5 kilo deadweight is the min sheep prices need to be in the 12 month cycle!

Farm input prices rise year on year and so MUST farm gate prices of livestock/ produce etc if the industry is to have a sustainable future!

2027 subs are gone, the new ELMS scheme will be an utter disaster for smaller family farms ( esp livestock ones ) will you still be happy with £5 kilo then??? aye right:rolleyes:

yep good post , problem is prices been too low for years , simply because tesco etc have played silly games with targeted imports at peak season (easter on) and kept prices down , now there is no imports to have as NZ and aus is going to usa and china , exports are driving trade now as it would have done last year had politics not made exporters nervous , (they still kept the difference on what they did export to europe though) ,there was always going to be a correction at some point
Aus prices have been £5 kilo for quite a while now and their carcases are a lot bigger then ours 50kg + , according to regular updates on my twitter feed .As you said going to need £5 kilo min when subs stop and thats without tapping into usa markets maybe .

Every industry knows what prices the market will stand for their product. Push it too far and demand will drop, or the competition will undercut you.
I agree that prices sub £4 earlier in the season were a waste of time, but if you cannot produce for less than £5 I fear you will be disappointed, at least some of the time.
Ranting that it must be more won't make it so. Farmers will keep prices under £5 in peak season because if they got near that, over production would follow.
Having said all that, world prices mean the future is currently positive, as long as we're not sold down the river with trade deal tariffs. But ranting won't alter world prices, for good or bad.

No one is ranting so stop making rubbish like that up trying to make yourself look clever!

No industry talks its prices down like some in the farming industry do!

Other industry's work out their cop and then price their product price to cover this and leave a sensible profit margin unlike farming where a few seem to be on a race to the bottom!

If subs go ( which they will ) lamb prices will have to be £5 a kilo min, your fooling yourself if you think otherwise!

If you're not ranting Guth, why do you need an exclamation mark after every sentence??

to be honest what would you pay a tradesman if you didnt know better £20 hour ? we all know its nearer £50 hr plus call out , all meat reared outside beef/ sheep price needs to be double and if joe public wants properly reared food and sustainable environment control they better suck it up .some women pay £40 a week just at the nail bar before we even get started on the hairdresser. Even a pint of beer is nearly a fiver, This is 2020 not 1980

I see both sides but I have to say I agree with guth. We can't can't keep going back wards in price on farms. I think some said earlier on here if lamb goes to dear they will swap well its seems simple to me put the price on everything up be level playing field then. At end of the day people got to eat and they got to realise that it cost a lot of money keep theses stock and I think a lot don't know that.

I have a lot of smaller breed lambs which are organic, always direct sell them in lamb boxes but if the prices are reasonable would be open to selling them deadweight as I have plenty left. 15-19kg carcass weight, but this is for private sales so not sure about the trimming everyone on here talks about!

What are my options (Wilts/somerset), and does anyone know prices. Don't want to take them to a market.

But not many industries work like farming.

I know my COP for lamb and grain.

But I have very limited outlets like most of us.

Sell live and take the risk on the day.

Sell dead at a price dictated to me.

Yes I can choose when to sell and that skill/decision making process is a vital part of my business........,

And one of the reasons I took the route of selling direct is to de-risk things. I can dictate the price as long as I have the quality.

South Molton had the dearest trade in the SW this week!

SQQ a very impressive 236.1pk ( up 20pk on the week )

Well ahead of deadweight even at £4.95 kilo!
I would have to disagree. I tried both this week and dead ahead. 46/47kg at market lucky if there 45kg x 2.36kg is £106.20. Same lambs do 22kg dead at £4.90 £107.80. These are base prices obviously better grade lambs will achieve more on both fronts. Later have no haulage charge, less costs. Although no chance of name in paper.
