Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

@Poorbuthappy i fully get your opinion of lamb getting too dear people look at alternatives, as happened the other spring when hogs off the scale and the following year a lot cheaper as supermarkets protected themselves by massively over ordering forward contracted lamb from mainly Nz to avoid them having the same situation. Also take on board @gone up the hill comments it needs to be at higher price levels, it certainly does, been a victim of supermarkets taking advantage of our received subs and them keeping prices down to levels received 2 decades before knowing we can keep heads above water. But when saying what else they will eat or what will supermarkets offer, their marketing strategy doesn’t change overnight, meat selling plans done six months minimum in advance, so whilst lamb really should be 5/kilo, if there is more margin with chicken bought at 2/kilo then that will be on shelves, they won’t present anything without a margin, those that miss lamb on shelves this day and age will be the minority. Where we are massively missing the trick is convenience foods, ready made meals, Waitrose shepherds pie top end 11.75/ kilo, leg 11/kilo. Yes manufacturing cost, packaging sweet fa, but add in volume of bread, potatoes, veg then that shepherds pie is one hell of a mark up. ReAlly think this is where we as an industry are missing out in a huge way, range, ideally a monopoly of high end ready meals, said before top end burger chain that sell 4oz or 6oz at up to 13 quid at service stations. Individual retailers have stepped in here, we have numbers in a huge way behind us, but our slaughter levies or national representatives to my knowledge not tried these routes that amazes me?

couldnt agree more. I went to Europe and there were a lot of lamb hot dogs / sausages and burgers around that seemed very popular. In this world convenience really is king..

Key point you are forgetting ( and wasn't the case 2 years ago when sheep prices hit record highs ) is that sheep numbers in NZ and especially Australia are very low and thus it is going to be very hard for the UK supermarkets to just order extra boatloads from there when the need to so they can keep a lid on UK prices!

China will be back buying meat like there is no tomorrow before long because the freezers in both homes and warehouses will be empty!

I’ve been ask to bid on 40 genuine flock age, in lamb ewes. Mainly Suffolk cross ewes, been running with a Suffolk ram but not been scanned. Due the same time as mine (early March). Any thoughts?

Apparently surplus beefs already gone.

Freezers might be full of natives if they keep dropping at same rate.

Also China will clamp down/stop any of these street markets that sell live animals for meat so all that meat will end up getting replaced by beef/lamb etc, as the pig population is now on its knees in that part of the world due to swine fever!

Events like above could not have been foreseen by anyone 4 months ago but it wouldn't surprise me now if the UK beef price jumped 30/40pk deadweight in a matter of a few weeks at some point like the sheep have done!

If they are good heavy well farmed sheep then £130, maybe upto £140 if they are really keen to have them, anymore and your just as well to go out and buy couple's!

Hope your right.

Selling 400-500kg charolais stores today making 240-250p/kg.

Hope the buyers make a decent profit.
