Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Key point you are forgetting ( and wasn't the case 2 years ago when sheep prices hit record highs ) is that sheep numbers in NZ and especially Australia are very low and thus it is going to be very hard for the UK supermarkets to just order extra boatloads from there when the need to so they can keep a lid on UK prices!

China will be back buying meat like there is no tomorrow before long because the freezers in both homes and warehouses will be empty!
That is true, but I think if my take on supermarket buying and selling is right, that a high price on lamb here, and a lack of forward bought lamb due to lack of numbers available from nz, means shelf space will not be given to lamb. Consumers sadly this day and age are not like us, love a piece of lamb one week but don’t see it for a month they won’t complain or miss it, more forgotten what lamb was and desire what was available last and this week and that is the reality. Unless as @FordFarmer backed me up with his comments, a regular convenience burger or sausage or English shepherds pie, most supermarkets shepherds pie still nz lamb, a way to shift lamb and minimalise price drop if no joints presented on shelves, which creates 20 ppk drop in dw, then floods of unfit lambs in lw following weeks as the end is nigh...it always happens so I’m not far off mark. Problem is we have no back up plan, prices dictated to us after years of selling in same way,now all our meat more or less is by supermarkets and hard to turn the tide

2/4pk off the under 30 month base price at most for clean cattle between 30/36 months old so not even worth worrying about!

Where do you send these that only knock 2/4 p off?
It is I agree a complete con trick as they state that these are not in spec for the supermarkets! However I bet the mince all goes in the same mixer so allowing them extra profit.
However if beef is really short then I guarantee that this will be one of the first "penalties" that disappears.

On the issue of world beef numbers and prices, I am sure there is a world shortage of protein however our beef price has always been at a higher level than most of the rest of the world so while prices will hopefully increase, I wouldn't expect to see dramatic rises that we are seeing in the hoggets.
The hogget price is mostly driven by the export market to the EU as they are short due to reduced amounts from NZ and there is no reason to believe this will change, however consumption here is falling.

,Processors are already renting extra cold storage to hold supplies up but cant be long before they start unloading on other markets .

Are you suggesting the processors are buying these £110 plus fat lambs and renting extra storage to cold store the lambs to sell on a dropping market at a loss later in the year just to help us out?

Anyone remember what the beef price did the last time the lamb price spiked?

Was in Tesco the other day, first time they have had uk pork joints on shelf everytime I have looked before its been dutch or danish. More concerning to me though was that they were sold out of Roast beef slices, they had just pushed sliced ham in to fill the space in the chiller.

nothing to do with talking price up , long term prospects are good .
the quote was from new zealand , silver fern farms (50% owned by china ) are renting extra cold storage due to disruption in shipping/handling in asia due to quarantine issues , there has been a que for killing beef and lamb due to on farm drought problems . At some point if china doesnt get issue under control they may need to move some product elsewhere .
You will note in piece "lamb and beef has been redirected at alternative markets "(maybe europe !)

Yea, I see your point about selling some of it at a discount, ( to ease pressure in cold stores) anyone know how long a boat takes to get here?
