This is not the issue, the problem is the lack of staff. Most of them are East European and they are all planning to go home this year anyway. Once they have left they have to self isolate at the moment and travel into this country for them is very difficult if not impossible now. My Brother in Law who has a Latvian worker is trying to go home but is struggling to find a way. Most flights are now cancelled and the buses have stopped running.

Millions of UK people will be out of a job before long and most of them will get no help from the UK government for weeks if at all..

6 months ago they wouldn't have dreamed of working in a food plant but I think as things stand they will now be happy to take any job they can get for a few months.

If the plants put a job ad on FB they will have plenty of intrest.

Also if there is a total lockdown aka house arrest ( in real terms ) a lot of people will be happy to have a valid reason to be allowed out of the house within 2/3 weeks of being shut indoors 24/7.

Not sure how many of them will work in an abattoir though! It takes a long time to become a good slaughterman who can do all types of stock.

It is interesting seeing the effect of all this on the local butchers. The shop trade for them has been exceptionally good and those with delivery service and internet ordering are really busy. However they are not sure how long this will last. Surprisingly lamb sales are better than beef sales and there is no logic to this apart from they have watched plenty of TV cooking programs where they use lamb.
At the moment price is not an issue but they think it will change as money gets tight.

Most serious is those that are supplying catering outlets which take all those big joints and steak, topside and ribs, it has completely stopped.
So it is only a matter of days before sales of the more expensive cuts stop and they just sell mince. Mcdonalds, Burger king will still need mince but the expensive cuts will be left with a negative effect on the Beef price. The World market is saturated with beef and Brazil have already suspended killing for shipping into China and other parts of Asia.

Interesting times to come but I won't be hanging on to anything that is finished hoping for more money!!!

Clearly most people cannot do a slaughterman's job but most of the other roles can easily be done by new staff with a bit of training.

If there is a total lockdown as talked about its very unlikely that maccy ds or burger king will be allowed to stay open and if they are it will only be the drive thru's that will still be open at most.

Like any times if the stock are fit to go you should sell them, all very well hanging onto them in the hope of better prices but they can soon go out of spec/ over fat or drop dead in the shed/ field.

Facebook has banned sales of animals unless you have a professional page or the animals are for rehoming I believe.

If you try and put a post up saying for example : I have 50 store cattle for sale and they see it they will lock your FB account for 7+ days.
Good job mine sold straight away, SellMyLiveStock I’d use that before these dealer types that sniff about .
