Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

And you say that they are going to switch to it just like that they will automatically forget about eating lamb/Hogg/ewe which is cheaper than last year incidentally!
Where have all of these McDonald’s eaters and restaurant frequenters gone to then?
Have they just disappeared? Or do you think they’ve stopped eating? Where do people go when the pubs are shut for a drink?
Garden most folks have one. Barbecue? What goes on a barbecue? ? Beefburgers!!

I hope prices rocket, I simply replied to one members post with regards to prices rising during Ramadan. I merely pointed out that this year we are facing tougher competition from surplus beef and poultry, as a result of restaurant closures. If we all hold ewes and hoggs back till the first week of Ramadan, prices may crash. I hope I am wrong.

Other then our own flock which is currently lambing we do not have a single sheep to sell, so if farmers sell now or wait till Ramadan has absolutely no impact on myself personally.

Prices may crash?
I think the airbags have already gone off.

Highland Meats down 5p for Scotch and 20p for cows next week. 70 staff down in boning hall and can't process what's already in chills fast enough so cutting kill numbers. Told them to cancel my load for next week and I hope others do the same but suspect will take more than one week to recover.
What does that make their base prices?

I don’t believe prices will get to where they were.
Many of us on here would just like to see a reasonable price if I can speak for others.
You may have excellent knowledge of the sheep trade. If we both knew what was in tomorrow’s paper we would both be millionaires.

The good news is that the small abattoirs are working to capacity. Our local place has gone from 3 days a week to 5 and are already booked out for next week. I could only get 20 hoggets in today but am anticipating needing over 50 again next week.

My neighbour has taken 6 cattle in this week and butchers wanted 8!
Look the supply chain is changing and all our local shops and butchers are now delivering to people. This actually means they order more and don't ask the price. They are pleased to get the food.

A little more positive thinking on here would be good. Forget bloody Tesco and NZ lamb and think of all the good things that will come out of this situation. I am convinced that local supply/demand is here to stay.
Was just talking about this today how the local butcher has a better supply chain model. The supermarkets with their great scale are relying on boning halls and processing plants with large workforces to keep them supplied. At present these are struggling with staff shortages and social distancing issues. The local butcher eliminates that link in the chain by being both processor and retailer of the entire carcase.

funny though they are out of spec but always come to more money, ppk doesn’t tell a full story, it’s the same with cattle. A lot depends what you are paying for the stores. In my experience some of those bigger white faced lambs are easier finishing that a lot else, depends on how much mule is in them.

Yes, they come to more money most years (not last year, when there were too many heavies), but they need to. They are dearer stores, or bred from big ewes with higher maintenance costs, and those bigger hoggs cost more in feed too, especially if stood round those big red hoppers everyone keeps shovelling feed into.

Price isn’t everything.;)

What knock on effect is this going to have on
the couples trade if price stagnates over the next few weeks?

A lot of breeding stock will have to be sold private and someone is
going to take a pill:(

totally agree price isn’t everything, we try not to over do the hoppers and are on home bred. Always look on a bit envious when they are knocking down those big fine texel, beltex though. I don’t know what the answer is really, it’s never good when you keep them this long and get a kicking though, demoralising. Let’s hope trade picks up again.

There’s a lot of people who keep hoggs and end up in this situation that we are in now often feed their way out of trouble. Bad ppk but a lot of kilos to go at. Doesn’t always work
well i recon if its ewe hoggs , no harm in sitting on them for a bit if you have grazing , wethers your prob right , no one can make any sense or predictions this year , it will prob get worse before it gets better
