Bulls (74) – Incredible, miraculous and breath taking, may the deadweight outlets across the UK hang their profit grabbing heads in shame and kneel before the live auction system; absolutely the trade of the century with bidding twice reaching 266ppk and a dozen over 250ppk with a fair percentage of dairy breeds through them showing an all in average of 219ppk. Top of the tree at the unthought-of 266 pence were two local vendors as A G Watson & Sons, Nunstainton Grange and P I Harker of Worsall Grove Farm etched their mark on the wall of fame, almost more incredible was that both bulls weighed exactly 722kg. The top gross values of late have often come from A C Simpson, McNeil Farm and with the last two out of the yard today it is safe to say that £2270 and £2144 are a pleasing conclusion to any pen of bulls in the land. Some simply monumental returns today, ten from Nunstainton Grange averaged 252ppk and £1796, two from Worsall Grove averaged 264ppk and £1929 and a perfectly fed trio from F & J S Gargett, Westwick Farm chased the leaders all the way to the post averaging 251ppk and £1913.

The share of the top spot went to regular customers R Hirst of Neasham Grange (541kg Limousin) and J B Luck of Milestone House (582kg Limousin). The heifers averaged a superb 240ppk and the better fed steers were similarly easy to sell, top priced steer per kilo was a smart 570kg Limousin across from Cumbria and the familiar face of J J Crichton, Loughrigg Farm which sold for 248ppk; leading the gross values was a fine advert for the DFAM store ring as a superb steer bought from Fristling Hall Farms, Essex on the 1st June had enjoyed his time in Northumberland at the good yard of M F Hall, Woodhill Farm when today he totalled an impressive £1710.

Lambs (2803) – Trade marches valiantly in to September with little evidence of letting up, a larger show averaged at 216ppk and £92.59 with the heavy lambs in particular a blistering trade again. The top spots were claimed by the Eastern contingents this week as a sublime pair of 39kg Beltex from M W Cook & Son, Kildale led the pence per kilo at 273 selling to Yorkshire Halal whilst a big single lamb from J L C Welford, Roxby topped the pounds per head at £125.50. Some useful averages again were achieved by vendors from all corners who continue to enjoy the tenacity and transparency of our live ring. 62 toppers from local producers C & E Gaskin, Hillingdon Farm averaged a massive £114 with another great local supporter D & P H Brown, Cordilleras averaging £110 with their trailer road; AWSM Farms turned out 60 crackers to average £107 whilst drawing them early for Durham sellers C S & V Whitfield (35 average 235ppk and £99) paid dividends. Thirty one from S Lamb, Doe Park also levelled out at £109, many of the DFAM faithful got a real kick of the ball this week including 25 from J Layfield, Knackshivan, 44 from D R Smith, East Roughlea and 41 from W Robson, High West House also all averaged beyond £100. Once again the midlands boys were up in force with a plethora of vendors making the worthwhile journey including A L Ablewhite, Nottinghamshire who peaked at £118.50 and 263ppk. The Mule lambs again appeared in numbers this week with a very respectable breed average of £83 and 194ppk, the sisters will need to sell well to justify the work that they entail.

When a country with as many mouths to feed as china starts to go short of anything the world will feel it. They only need to shift eating habits due to grain shortages and food prices will rise worldwide. Farmers have always said we need food to go short for the general public to realise its worth ,and the run on supermarkets at the start of covid might have just been the warm up act for whats to come

Check your wheels!

There was a fatal accident earlier this week in Devon when a wheel came off a livestock box and very sadly it hit and killed a chap walking his dog so please everyone check your trailer tyres/ spare wheels etc, will only take seconds but may save a life.
Those trailer wheel bearings that design should be banned. The old ones had a washer on the nut to stop that happening. Sometimes no amount of checking can stop that. If the bearing picks up then the wheel is off.

I was once taking a load of lambs to put onto a wagon in a council depot just off a motorway junction...on the way there a wheel flew off and bounced away down the fell, never did see it again.
When i got to the depot there was a police car there prob having his break, as well as the artic lorry....it was interesting rocking up on 3 wheels, i had to manoeuvre my trailer so as he never saw the side with the wheel off, a bit of reversing here and there and i managed to unload and away home without him seeing!

A lot of folks that use those trailers have had this happen with no warning. Bloody bad design. Wheel bearings don’t last forever but there’s no need in this day and age for the wheel and the hub to be ejected to wherever it pleases to go

Mule x Charolais donkeys, the 44.5’s were a bit lean, the last 2 pens were well fleshed.
