Trade anit like that down here for them
We've always fancied going for a spin down to Sedge to buy calves (and not because of your statement). For a few years a woman from not far from here used to go down every week with a tractor and trailer!

The only problem we would have is there is vertually zero trade for English tagged cattle in our local marts so we would have to haul them back over the bridge to sell, and that would probably kill any profit left.

I felt there was a still a very big demand for quality calves (beef and dairy) with still a lot in the late £300's to the early £400's.

Beefy friesian types were still making very strong money in my eyes. There was a run of calves that looked like they were calved out of heifers, they were back but you wouldn't be able to do much with them if you know what I mean.
🤣🤣🤣 Still can't get my head round farmers will to give £350-£400+ for a calf.....!!! Dullness.......!!

Why do you say there's zero trade for English tagged? Cattle we buy mainly English and sell in a Welsh market buyers buy what is in front of them and don't bat an eyelid

No I said there is vertually zero trade for them around here.

We bought some calves off a dealer a few years ago and a few of them were engished tagged. Took them to market a year after and only two English dealers bid on them (total disaster), none of the local dealers/farmers were interested. I asked the auctioneer after the sale what was wrong with them as they were tidy in my eyes, and he said that Welsh slaughterhouses insist that cattle are produced from Welsh farms hence no call for them.

Did the rules ever come into force that english cattle had to be tested if they went to homes in wales after 60days at the purchasers expense or not

I don't know Werzle and I'd be lieing if I said otherwise.

There was talk about high risk moving to low risk tb areas having to test but no one has knocked on our door yet. (probably because we are in a high risk area ourselves)

Fat trade has lifted abit this week in the live markets and merthyr have been ringing for cattle
There's talk on the radio this morning that Rhondda and Merthyr will join Caerphilly in a zonal lockdown.

Would this effect the efficiency of the slaughterhouse?

He was spinning you an untruth there. The Welsh slaughterhouses are owned by Irish companies with multiple sites over the UK. You might get a couple of pence more for Welsh tags every now and then but there is plenty of demand for everything nowadays

If I get a chance I'll take a look this evening at the wording of our contract of supply. I'm not 100% sure but I think it mentions the origin of the animal to be Welsh.

Some supermarkets around here stock Welsh beef and lamb maybe for that job?

Do you think that a proportion of Welsh Beef and Scotch Beef might actually come from the Republic?
