Top price per kilo came from a sensational pen travelled down from Morpeth and the good home of the Renton Family, High Highlaws; the five British Blue crossed Limousin’s averaged a sensational 244ppk and £1729, twice reaching a peak of 248ppk. The top gross value stayed local with D Richardson & Co, Bracken House; a whopping 876kg British Blue sold for 232ppk and £2032, the magnificent 9 from this home averaged £1734. Regular supporters A G Watson & Sons, Rushyford again turned out 10 perfectly fed bulls to average 233ppk whilst W J & A S Bowes & Sons, Stainton had a top trio averaging 237ppk; a trio from good supporters the Harle Family of Brandon Hall averaged 231ppk whilst another vendor now established as a valued regular, J W Holmes & Son, Chestnut Farm showing his 130th beast since June in DFAM averaged 227ppk with his 7 top quality bulls.

Prime Cattle (156) – Slightly easier than the last week however trade remaining very buoyant and certainly one to rival anywhere in the land, the heifers averaged an impressive 231ppk with the steers 216ppk, again DFAM led the pack today. The top price of 270ppk was achieved twice during the sale, a shapely 481kg Limousin heifer was the first to get there from M & G Chantrell Ltd, Flash Farm making the 4am load in Leicestershire this morning worthwhile, a terrific 20 (5 steers, 15 heifers) from this home averaged 248ppk. The second beast in the 270 club came from local supporters, and no strangers to the top spots, J V & J A Hodgson, Summerhouse with a 500kg Limousin. Topping the gross values this week once again were some unbelievably good steers from F & R Simpson, Square House Farm, Quebec at £1764, five superstars from this home averaged beyond £1600. Top steer per kilo was some machine from M F Hall, Woodhill Farm, Ponteland, a 641kg Limousin selling for 264ppk, amazingly the same home also sold a steer for 263ppk on the day. Good days in the clean ring were had by N White of Marrick with 4 averaging 244ppk, R Hirst of Neasham produced 10 to average 242ppk and A L Ablewhite 14 to average 242ppk. Final mention goes to another regular B Walker of Birch Springs, Dalton-on-Tees with the leading gross valued heifer, an uncharacteristically heavy sort from this home over 700kg amounted to an impressive £1596.

Cows & OTM (11) – A trio of cows from A L Ablewhite of Elm Farm, Nottinghamshire sold very well with several outlets bidding freely, the pick of these was a March 2016 born British Blue which sold for 189ppk and £1330. The OTM’s on offer today varied as can often be the case, absolutely full of meat was a huge 2017 born Limousin heifer from T N Callender, Ox Eye Farm, she deservedly amounted to an impressive £1564.

OTM Steers – Top price ppk 194 R&LJ Simpson.

Lead Grossing Cast Cows £1330 £1326 £788 AL Ablewhite.

Prime Lambs (2074) – Better fed and better bred lambs in short supply today, the sale SQQ of 194ppk and all in average of 191ppk only tells half the story, the buyers are sniffing out lean meat now with unnerving accuracy, those producers who have filled the troughs very much continue to thrive. The top slots were dominated today by W Ramsay & Sons, Blakeley Hill Farm, Wingate with 20 absolute superstars, a special run of Texel and Beltex left Humbleton Park with the top gross price of £130, top pence per kilo of 268ppk and an average of £119. A single lamb at £130 sold to Hartshead Meats whilst a pen of 8 near perfect sorts headed to Roots Farm Shop, Northallerton for 268ppk (48kg £128.50). Lamb trade in general remains remarkable, the corresponding sale last year witnessed just 2 pens of lambs reach £100, today the three figure barrier was reached and passed on over 40 occasions.

Lambs – Top prices ppk 268 228 224 212 W Ramsay & Sons. 255 R McAnency. 245 226 W Robson. 233 229 213 212 High Harbour Farms. 232 221 A Crowder. 230 227 M Smith. 226 223 Askwiths. 224 M Jopling. 223 MF Hall. 222 W.K M.M Lamb. 220 M&A Gaskin. 218 RG&G Rutter. 217 HT Davies & Partners. 216 S Davies. 214 GP Addison. 214 T Lawson. 213 AL Ablewhite. 211 J Hird. 211 A&EJ Dobinson.

Cast Ewes (966) – An unpredictable ewe trade is often what October produces and today was no exception, the buyers remain focussed on the quality but with grass disappearing, thus creating an increased supply nationally trade is likely to hold back for a good few weeks yet. Top price was a terrific £137 achieved by a pair of wonderful pure Texel ewes from N & A Bainbridge, Laneside, Harwood-in-Teesdale.

Lead Grossing Cast Sheep £137 £119 N&A Bainbridge. £109 JV&JA Hodgson. £105 D Barron. £104 £95 £91 J Norman. £98 AL Ablewhite. £94 £90 £87 £83 High Harbour Farms. £91 £86 J Woodward & Sons. £90 JM&S Walton. £89 J&RA Speed. £86 £85 DK Barker. £85 CJM Hedley. £84 Rebecca Appleton. £83 Askwiths. £82 TN Callender. £81 B Lowson. £81 G Thompson.

What the hell do you feed your lambs?

pea/bean dressings from the seed cleaners, mixed with cast off feed oats from local mill and dribble of water& molasses to damp the dust make them palatable all mixed together via an auger.

These last few draws have been ones that had just put on big frame in the summer but bulked out when the grass came better and had some grub.

What did the incalvers make towards the end and how was trade in general ?
I left before the incalvers. Quality sold well . My purchases were a bit 'middle of the road ' the top heifer and calf was £1180 the bull calf is Angus named Sire . The next pic was £1700 with heifer calf and the third 1600 with bull calf . The 2nd and 3rd were dear enough I think as the heifers are a bit small . The dispersal of the pedigree Herefords I thought was a dismal show . ....Sevenoaks filled his lorries up with them for not too much money . Plenty of them with bull calves under a £1000 !

What you’ve bought looks good. I don’t think you could buy them at Carlisle or Hexham for that money.
