That’s why I like Bentham and the evening fatstock sale. I don’t have to leave home till 2pm. So plenty of time too get jobs in order. Then go, unload sort too my spec. Have my tea in the canteen and watch them sold. If I rushed straight home it would be too late too do anything.Well farming a time related business and standing around is dead time and actually harder than being at work.
It makes no difference if you are there or not the only important thing is the sorting of lots/types.
I may look at it differently to others but with a lot of stock and big acerages to cover you are never done with work so I’m not inclined to waste time.
You can leave reserves.
Others with work in volume do the same.
Yeh it's gonna be hero or zero after 1st Jan... Let's hope Boris comes good with his negotiationsMy prediction is another 2/3 weeks of just shy of £2kg then a steady increase up too about £2.30kg around Christmas ... followed by a fairly sharp increase up too 2.60 1st of January or a massive fall too 1.50 1st of January ...
I have not so fond memories of Kirby where I would get there 2.30. /4.30 sort up lambs and ewes then see stock sold get back anywhere from 9.30/latest was. 1 am then start doing some work for the morning. That’s the main reason I don’t go.That’s why I like Bentham and the evening fatstock sale. I don’t have to leave home till 2pm. So plenty of time too get jobs in order. I strongly dislike leaving my stock too be sold without me. If the jobs bad I want to be there too ensure they all come home rather than be given away. I find that if the buyers know you will run the whole lot out if they start pissing about they tend too behave. Brought sheep home plenty of times (and cattle for that matter) the closest I got was at Chelford, I was just putting the last lot on the wagon when Emyr came running down the pens and bid me 15ppk more than he had in the sale for the whole load. I went home smiling that week and he didn’t pee about with our sheep again after that.
You sound an very efficient farmer, not like the old day when the farmers went to the mart 2/3 days a week if they were selling owt or nowt but they had hired men doing the work for themI have not so fond memories of Kirby where I would get there 2.30. /4.30 sort up lambs and ewes then see stock sold get back anywhere from 9.30/latest was. 1 am then start doing some work for the morning. If your buying cattle and lambs for customers why do you goto sedgemoor if Exeter is nearer and always cheaper according to your "report "?One hell of a store lamb trade today!
Small lambs would be up anything from £5 to £10 head on last week, the rest up £2 on the week, most of the small long keep lambs ( ie : Some that wont make the distance type lambs around 10/15 kilos weight ) would be anything from £59/68 head, the worse it was bred the better it was sold!
Also one hell of a store cattle trade, well up on last week and very dear for this time of year.
Stirks again a very solid trade and well up on the week, suckler cattle especially well up and looking very well sold on the week, trade for these type of Cattle V Exeter yesterday would be anything from £50/ to £100 head dearer today than at Exeter yesterday, esp for the top end suckler bred cattle.
