Exeter's store lamb trade has been the dearest in the SW all season.

Some large volume buyers have actually told RS that they will not attend Exeter now as the trade is far and above anywhere else in the UK for Store lambs and even thou they do not now come to Exeter if has not made one iota of difference to the very strong trade that is currently the case at Exeter.

The good ones aren’t cheap anymore. Lots of people doing the same thing. And they have a terrible habit of throwing lambs that are mud fat at 34/35kg. That’s one of the reasons we stopped the welshie job. We used too run 600 welsh and Beulah ewes, all correct or broken when they came. Texel tips on them and finish the lot. The maths worked out well but then the draft ewes started too get too dear and the sugarbeet nuts we used to get them through the winter started too get very very dear!

Your right the welshie ewe isn't as cheap is it used to be, I bought more 100 this time to tup to a lean maternal lleyn and they weren't cheap at all but have been bought to do a job. I will sell all the weather lambs straight off the ewes as stores in August and they should pay to produce 65/70 ewe lambs to start a nice white headed flock of ewes to got to a beltex cross Charollais tup.

I had years of doing that. Sold 400 draft ewes at 3 crop their prime every year and lambed 500 shearlings and kept hundreds with no teeth. It can be done but there can be a few disasters along the way.
Cull ewe values and disposal charges have persuaded me to keep a relatively younger flock
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do though
I've ever ever understood people who sell 3/4 yr old ewes. Why...? They scan well, mother well, know your farm (the run) by then. I always reakon that's when they're at there productive & I got mates that sell um in the autumn why 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️......
They do seem to be less doing it now mind..

To keep them young when running hard land?

I believe less are doing it because sheep are being ran at lower stocking densities so last longer and can be culled at better money than in the past too so don’t end up worthless on a hill
