How was cattle trade today @Hfd Cattle ? Lamb and cull ewe numbers back by over half yesterday, did they ask farmers not to bring them?
should be a must have skill , people might take a bit more care buying ewes and rams (out the cull ) if there was a decent price differential , as is always the case with the lamb job , processor throughput always clouds the issue .That said seems to be a lot of killers bought out the stores on a regular basis , so dont know how much of an issue it isSome of them have no idea how to draw fat lambs.
I find it strange how more markets don’t have graders.should be a must have skill , people might take a bit more care buying ewes and rams (out the cull ) if there was a decent price differential , as is always the case with the lamb job , processor throughput always clouds the issue .That said seems to be a lot of killers bought out the stores on a regular basis , so dont know how much of an issue it is

If a small market like Salisbury can employ one surely these big sheep markets can find an old boy or two to help sort finished from stores before sale? At least everyone knows where they stand then.
Depends on your system. I sell our barren texel cross ewe hoggs every year. Never missed them yet. Just end up with fat idle shearlings if I keep them. Plenty more ewe lambs too pick from the following autumnSelling ewe lambs ultimately cost s long run , it’s a bit short sighted .
Without sounding big headed I know a well finished lamb. I’ve been sorting them since I was big enough too handle them. Sort a few thousand every year.I don’t think I’d sell at a market that doesn’t grade... id like too think (naive I know) that the auction are better suited too knowing how best too pen lambs too the type of buyers they have to get me the best price and them the best trade...

I’m not confident at it so I get the auctioneer out , it’s a weee bit of help as well when on your own .should be a must have skill , people might take a bit more care buying ewes and rams (out the cull ) if there was a decent price differential , as is always the case with the lamb job , processor throughput always clouds the issue .That said seems to be a lot of killers bought out the stores on a regular basis , so dont know how much of an issue it is
Greg used to be an auctioneer up here , I thought he was good our loss your gain .Without sounding big headed I know a well finished lamb. I’ve been sorting them since I was big enough too handle them. Sort a few thousand every year.
But I still prefer Greg at Bentham too do the final sort into lots before the sale. He’s a wizard on that shedder and he knows what he wants grouped up and in what batches too sell them. He always asks if they are alright for me when he’s finished. I might shift the odd one around but it is the odd one! But a lot of folk seem too take exception too someone else sorting their sheep. They’d learn a thing or two if they shut up and watched the mart lads at work!
Couple of years ago when price went sky high in the spring I was helping on the shedder after mine had gone through. A big finisher’s son had sent 300 while his dad was away. 2/3 finished, 1/3 mediocre stores. Greg shed them all out, rang the lads dad and told him he was sending these stores back on the same decker that brought them. “Don’t send unfinished lambs here then complain about the price!” Fella accepted the verdict and sent them back 6 weeks later as proper hoggs!
Takes some balls too tell a finisher that I thought!
i dont think you need to worry!Whats the store cattle trade like at moment?? Got some 24 mnth lim dairy cross to go. Steers and Hefiers

Beltexes can be a bugger for throwing arched back lambs.Difference between breeds too. Some mules never seem to be good on the back now but are good tails same with Swale tups it’s in the breeding

He was part beltex then too?Had a texel ram last year that’s back looked fine ... all his lambs started too arch there’s backs at about 12 weeks old
Aye, most auctions would have just sold them "stores" & taken the commision.Without sounding big headed I know a well finished lamb. I’ve been sorting them since I was big enough too handle them. Sort a few thousand every year.
