Some of them have no idea how to draw fat lambs.
should be a must have skill , people might take a bit more care buying ewes and rams (out the cull ) if there was a decent price differential , as is always the case with the lamb job , processor throughput always clouds the issue .That said seems to be a lot of killers bought out the stores on a regular basis , so dont know how much of an issue it is

I find it strange how more markets don’t have graders.
If a small market like Salisbury can employ one surely these big sheep markets can find an old boy or two to help sort finished from stores before sale? At least everyone knows where they stand then.

I don’t think I’d sell at a market that doesn’t grade... id like too think (naive I know) that the auction are better suited too knowing how best too pen lambs too the type of buyers they have to get me the best price and them the best trade...

Without sounding big headed I know a well finished lamb. I’ve been sorting them since I was big enough too handle them. Sort a few thousand every year.

But I still prefer Greg at Bentham too do the final sort into lots before the sale. He’s a wizard on that shedder and he knows what he wants grouped up and in what batches too sell them. He always asks if they are alright for me when he’s finished. I might shift the odd one around but it is the odd one! But a lot of folk seem too take exception too someone else sorting their sheep. They’d learn a thing or two if they shut up and watched the mart lads at work!
Couple of years ago when price went sky high in the spring I was helping on the shedder after mine had gone through. A big finisher’s son had sent 300 while his dad was away. 2/3 finished, 1/3 mediocre stores. Greg shed them all out, rang the lads dad and told him he was sending these stores back on the same decker that brought them. “Don’t send unfinished lambs here then complain about the price!” Fella accepted the verdict and sent them back 6 weeks later as proper hoggs!

Takes some balls too tell a finisher that I thought!

Aye, most auctions would have just sold them "stores" & taken the commision.
