And i remember trade not being sa flash when a pen of 25 lambs would come in and GT the auctioneer would say 'pounds for numbers'
Hope we never hear that phrase again !

I passed some out of one mart when I was left in charge took them there with father a month later and sold them for £2 less!!!

In 99 we had a nice run of lambs so thought we would take the old style video recorder to film them being sold.....last 3 or 4 pens made in the high teens .. . Its great viewing

Yes the sheep job was on its knees around then. I bought a lot of ewes and they were worth less than half within a year

I think it was 99 the bad year....we went to middleton and bought some stock shearlings at a friends dispersal for £2 apiece!

I remember artic loads of brokers coming in at sub £2, they were rough mind but no disposal cost so wasn’t so bad, fat lambs making £25 iirc?

Pounds for numbers! Hell I’ve not heard that for ages!! GT! Grandad reckons he’s one of the best auctioneers he’s ever dealt with. Could extract the last bid out of anybody!
As said above He says it was an education at the old AM sale. 2 pens of 10 then nothing under 25’s. Once you got onto runners GT would start shouting “let the next lot in! I’ve customers here too take them by the hundred!” He says is a close run thing between Maurice and Gordon which of them would push you further!

Sold 100 draft Swale ewes correct for £10 a piece at Tow Law and they wanted them delivered got a speeding ticket on the way there too!!

Just looked in Grandads book. 2000 we gave from £38-£50 for 168 strong tuppers from Alston Moor. Apparently the £38 were a pen of 20 pale faced mules but almost the size of shearlings. There’s a side note, (£1 luck on pen!)

I seem to remember a farm sale on most Saturdays in the back end we went to buy cows usually then spent about three hours trying to get loaded up and out of the place
