This is an unusually large drop in price and should not be as large.
The numbers of lambs being 70% down is not always accurate as it depends on how many markets have reported. Ewes are also down almost 70% as are cattle numbers which probably indicates that some large markets have not reported. In fact Bakewell, Caithness, Carlisle, Castle Douglas, Darlington, Market Drayton and Penrith have not reported.

There are a huge number of world issues going on that are reducing economic stability, you only have to look at the Stock market numbers.
Most of these would normally have a positive effect on food prices so it is surprising to see meat prices falling especially as the pound is weakening against the euro. However I have doubts that the deadweight price will fall very much.
There is also no doubt that many lambs are not killing out very well at present with many under finished. There will also be an increased number of cattle coming off grass which would be better sold in the stores.

It is possible that the spat with France over defence contracts might be making exports more difficult.

It also makes me question how many farmers put reserves on their stock when sell live?

Everyone’s circumstances are different and there is always pressure to sell at this time of year. I read on here that some markets still grade lambs and divert under finished lambs to the store ring. I know that different sale days prevents this at some markets but I think if all markets had a grader it would help to keep the SQQ up. Under finished stock is the processors friend.😉

All to do with staff shortages, MQ reporting one firm trying to bring in brazilian workers but they failed the entrance test because they couldnt speak english
