What would £85 buy you, not been for a month myself, has the larger entry brought the price back a touch? And me, first time I'd been there this time
Beef needs to be £5 and lambs £10What are people's thoughts on the sustainability of the finished beef / lamb prices into the 2022 given the increase in inputs ?
realistically though...!Beef needs to be £5 and lambs £10
Per kilo not head
I’m being realistic…realistically though...!
I think sue too the lack of stock worldwide the finished price is very sustainable as it stands now. People have got used too the increased cost of red meat. What are people's thoughts on the sustainability of the finished beef / lamb prices into the 2022 given the increase in inputs ?
Thats going to be the crux of it going forward.Depends how reliant on feed purchases and fert you are…
Very few can do without one or the other to feed stock. It will make for a very testing spring trade for store cattle especially if it’s a late oneThats going to be the crux of it going forward.
Tbf i think it just drives the finishing job into the big boys hands more and more, they grow most of the feed they need apart from perhaps protein and probably carry alot of fert over too or are geared up to using alternative ferts, poultry litter etc. I know of two large arable/poultry farms that are buying cattle this autumn for the first time in 4 yrs and they dont do anything without first having the best advice.Very few can do without one or the other to feed stock. People will need to start thinking and working different if prices don’t ease.Very few can do without one or the other to feed stock. It will make for a very testing spring trade for store cattle especially if it’s a late one
Very very true. We don’t use much fert but buy plenty of feed too feed cattle and make muck instead of fert!Very few can do without one or the other to feed stock. It will make for a very testing spring trade for store cattle especially if it’s a late one
Turn the heifers out and buy another bull?People will need to start thinking and working different if prices don’t ease.
Longtown had nearly 10,000 lambs/feeding ewes in yesterday. I took a pen of tup lambs.Bit disappointed but not many people want store tup lambs only Paul Bouch. Will have to finish what ive got left at home. Lost mine in the alleys as got there very late, and only dawned on me that they ran them in to sell first after the Blackies and Cheviots. Could have been worse,i think they would still be selling after 5 pm.So to summarise for you, the market robbed you but still robbed you £5 less then mr dw??
I’ve been taking some most weeks they have been a decent trade. Haven’t had many tups there thoughLongtown had nearly 10,000 lambs/feeding ewes in yesterday. Texts from Ruthin market about welshpool.I’m glad to hear they were back yesterday. I had 88 in which, all bar 11 of a narrower white faced breed, were one of the best run of lambs I’ve ever taken there. There were a couple of Beltex x Charollais ewe lambs in there, which didn’t stand out.
In usual market tradition, every pen was 44 or 44.5kg, despite them being spread from from 44 to 47kg at home (7 miles away).
They made between £100 and £104 per head. A fiver or so better than the 44kg lambs that went dw to Kepak last week, but disappointed they weren’t better.
People that I spoke to didn't think it was any easier, 85 would still buy a good lamb but you'd struggle to get the better headed lambsWhat would £85 buy you, not been for a month myself, has the larger entry brought the price back a touch?
What weights do you think they areLast bunch of store lambs going tomorrow. Happy if they make £70. View attachment 992464View attachment 992465
Just watched a few weaners at Carlisle on line.Just finished selling. I wouldnt have liked to be selling today. Two pens of 7 named sire Angus steers and heifers £630 and £500.Little better than calf prices. There seemed to be any amount of decent cattle in the £600s.They must be almost £200/head less than for same size cattle from May/June.I’ve been taking some most weeks they have been a decent trade. Haven’t had many tups there though
