Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

AHDB (& HCC) purely compile average prices from mart reports. What’s not to like about that? I get an HCC text every night, giving me the sqq average over all markets that day. I’ll take that over any fictitious nonsense from an auctioneer.👍

I’d take their annual predictions of trade with more of a pinch of salt of course.🤐
Well it has to rise and fall at some point and that’s never important when it’s yesterday now is it??

Maybe they don’t like you?
Are you saying you send stock to the mart without ringing to find out what trade there is for what you are selling?
Maybe 🤷‍♂️
Why would I need to phone? I know pretty close what trade is going to be on the Tuesday as I get a text from them every Monday with average lamb prices from welshpool for that day like I posted the screenshot of earlier. Very similar markets with very similar lambs sold. Often get texts about what's in demand and what sold well. I'm not dropping enough numbers there in one go to make a difference.
If I have something different like toother hoggs or cull ewes that might lamb again for someone I'll ask when I'm there the week before or phone of I'm not. They do ask for stores and breeding stock to be entered but I don't sell those.

All very well but it is important to you though that’s the point
Someone with a few to sell has as much or more pressure to market their stock well as someone with big numbers
As I’ve said it takes two minutes on the phone to find out
Funny how we spend all that time tending stock for ages but some won’t make a call
I’m fairly sure your mart will value you if they don’t take them elsewhere

Do you really think the marts can go by any more information than what trade was like nationally the day before? I really can’t imagine any volume buyers ringing to tell them that they’re desperate for lambs and willing to pay whatever it takes, even when they are.

I see lambs avg £2.49 all in at Skipton £2.52 sqq. Damn good trade although I appreciate Skipton do draw a lot of top end stock in as well as the hill breeds.
Made me smile that the top priced heavy Swaledale lambs @ £110 were from farmers not far from here who are 15 miles from Bakewell at most. But it pays them too travel too Skipton with their lambs… case of very keen auctioneers over “don’t really care” types who are happy too have 1 dealer dictate their trade!

Hey they ring them up and they know who’s coming and what they want
They all like talking to/ABOUT each other too which helps
Then there’s all the rest of the information
You stick to yesterday’s paper

While I agree, Greg at Bentham can usually tell me who will be quiet and who will be fired up a couple of days before the sale. That information is vital when we are drawing if the man for lightweights isn’t over keen but him that takes big rough lambs is on fire. John at Longtown is the same. But I think it does make a big difference too the amount of info you get if you are quite happy too sit on them until they are wanted or take them elsewhere altogether if they tell you a load of 💩 and you get stung, or have too take a ruck back home.

Plus if they know you’re coming and what you’re bringing they can prime up your usual buyers too be ready for you. Same goes for stores, cattle the lot. A good man should be on that phone all the time gathering vendors and buyers alike. Not favouring big distance men over the local dependables though. This does happen a bit and it’s not fair. (Mainly because I’m not big enough too be included…) 😂😂

I can see a point when your selling a ruck of ‘lightweights’ or other ‘specialist’ varieties like those little horned things you keep buying.
Most people though, will surely be just producing bog standard, mainstream prime lambs, which find a ready market for multiple outlets?

Very true, but it’s amazing how many people just go to the same market week in week out and the buyers can be taking the pee something rotten but they won’t do anything about it (except moan) we do love a good moan! 😂😂

Gaerwen mart trade all depends on how much lambs where at bryncir, bala sale all depends on how much lambs where at St Asaph , you can ring and tell them how much are coming But the auctioneer at either mart would care less and they would still take a few kgs off as usual, maybe ringing up to se how much kgs are being deducted would be more beneficial?

Which brings me back too my original point, give them a good loud bollocking (no swearing, that defeats the object) and go elsewhere for a few weeks. That ought too sharpen the buggers up.
