Last year our fertiliser spreader blocked and I managed to miss a strip in the middle of a field. The yield off that bit was noticeably less, it wouldn't have been enough to see us through winter. Normally we use 1.5 cwt urea plus slurry, we've ordered enough for 1 cwt/acre at great expense, if we didn't use any the rent and contractor's charges wouldn't drop .

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 8th November




Plenty going on at Bakewell with new faces both amongst the buyers and the sellers.

795 Cattle and 1,793 Sheep on offer and prices stronger than ever.

A tremendous entry of 494 Store & Breeding Cattle maintained recent levels of trade with Steers to £1,520, Heifers to £1,380 and Feeding Bulls to £950.

In the Breeding Section Cows with Bull Calves reached £1,920 with Cows with Heifer Calves to £1,880.

The Finished Cattle ring saw plenty of highlights with top figures 330p/kg and top gross £1,971.

An indicator of the level of trade was the Heifer average of 242.1p for the 44 animals on offer with 36 Steers at 238.8p.

A good turnout of 137 OTM and Feeding Cows saw another solid trade with top figures 213p and £1,520 per head. The overall average was a creditable 128.1p.

Calf numbers at 60 this week with Bulls to £440 and Heifers £280.

Sheep prices on the up again for the 1,259 Lambs on offer. Top prices 320p/kg and £172.20.

The all important SQQ average was 262.4p.

Cull Sheep out in force at 533 with Ewes to £149 to average £84.90.

We had 522 head of stock forward including 199 Cattle

at our weekly fatstock market.
Quality of the clean cattle improved from last week, and nice to see the trade bouncing back too.
CATTLE
58 Continental Young Bulls sold to 269p/kg from S Beachell & Son and to £2080.46 from D J & S A Beal; to average 236.12p/kg.
9 Native Breed Young Bulls sold to 240p/kg from G Baxter & Sons and to £1802.62 from R M Teasdale; to average 218.94p/kg.
16 Continental X Steers sold to 300p/kg from L Dale & Son and to £2025.94 from E A Hughes; to average 273.13p/kg.
40 Continental X Heifers sold to 323p/kg from P B Fox & Son and to £2015.24 from L Dale & Son; to average 275.13p/kg.
