You know how livestock1 said if someone by him bought cattle from down south they would get punched in the face. Well that's what that farm did. A lot. They could have used a bit of bloody common sense. Quite a few others have done it and been caught out fair enough they only do it once because they don't want punched in the face. but this other farm have been doing it for years and now out area has gone from a low risk to intermediate risk area. They're down with it all the bloody time.

I agree with you 100% that the wildlife need sorting as well and we will never sort it without doing that.
But here it's all been through cattle being moved into the area. The farm that keep doing it are very unpopular with their neighbours.
Down here it’s not a case of another farm going down, most farms are down with it and have been for 15-20 years. It’s rare once a big herd goes down that they pass 2 follow up clear tests. Completely closed herds and have been for years yet still testing every 60 days - most of these wouldn’t take sheep on tack either as they need the ground to put slurry on - own equipment too so don’t share umbilical pipes with other farms because of TB spreading etc.
In Cardigan where they started the B cull the cases started dropping, some B were vaccinated but all sets were identified, the vaccination program was stopped as they needed the vaccine for the human population in London that arn’t vaccinated (foreigners) the sets were already identified and farmers did their own thing. They were TB free very soon after - they did have the coast and a few big rivers around the area so they couldn’t have new B travelling in.
The local area here of circa 5-6mile doesn’t have much TB but the vets have said it is getting closer every year and it will get to us!

An uncle of mine was on the TB eradication program in the 80’s and he has said they would identify a set, take 1 B from each set and have it PM’d and tested. If infected they’d gas that whole set, leaving clean sets. He worked for 4 years doing it across the whole of Wales and England and when they only had weeks left until they would have done the whole country the funding was stopped and all that work had gone to waste!

A small herd next door to where I used to work lost 49/103 cows in 1 test, next test 60 days later took 45 cows, they’d never had it before, all stock gone in 60 days 😮 they’ve never restocked from 10 years ago.

The daft part is that they can supposedly identify infected setts without even having to catch a badger with modern testing, so even easier to do it now. Killing infected badgers known to be infected is surely an easier sell to the general public too?

But no, Welsh government are wanting to reduce ‘trap & test’, divert the money to the ineffective vaccination program and restrict cattle movements further.

Livestock & Farm Sales

⚡️🤩WOW WOW WOW🤩⚡️

🎁A first count of 🌟£41,997🌟 was raised last night at our annual Charity Christmas Show & Sale!🎁

This money will be donated to the Cancer Fund for Children NI, a charity very close to our hearts.

💙Our family has been completely overwhelmed by the support we have received over the last number of months, and we sincerely thank you for this. Last night highlighted yet again the generosity of our farming community that we are so proud to be part of💙

From boluses at £800, a toy tractor at £600, cow at £2450, not to mention the country will be coming down with apple tarts🍏😅

The livestock on display was second to none (full report to follow) and the sale ring was flying!!

🌟Thank you so much to our customers who bought stock, brought stock, our staff who donated their wages from last night, the local businesses who donated to the auction and raffle and to every person who bought auction items and raffle tickets.🌟

Your generosity will enable the vital work of Cancer Fund for Children who support sick children and their families.

That’s fantastic!!

Fair enough in a way if they brought it to the area.
Can I ask if you buy any bovine's in and if so do you quarantine them and test for things like BVD or IBR ? because they can be passed on
Only bought bulls for the last 20+ years. Try and buy from accredited herds the last 3 bulls have been accredited I know but I'm not sure about before then I wouldn't have known to ask. Just had 5, heifers tested for bvd on the Welsh scheme and am waiting on results. The last ones I did were clear though so I'd expect these to be as well.
I can work quite well with my neighbours we don't really have cattle sharing boundary fences we try and work together to keep our cattle away from each other. Don't know what else we can do really without going for full accreditation ourselves but that seems a bit overkill for a commercial herd.

We test for BVD the same as you do, I wouldn't think you need to do any more than that

Tag testing all calves is simple, cheap and easy.
2 years mandatory testing and it should be a thing of the past. We’ve tag tested for 7/8 years now. Only had reactors the first year. They were removed streight away and never had a problem since. Think its £2ish extra a calf over the normal tag price. By far the cheapest and easiest way.

Store cattle trade today at Sedge was simply Nuts!

All cattle but the very worst were up at least £100 head on the week and many were up £150 head on the week according to some buyers!

Either the beef price is about to jump 50ppk or there is one hell of a lot of cheap grain about!

Or people have just realized there is two Saturdays coming up with no market ( Xmas and NY day )
