We don't pay for belly shearing down here on the live but do on the dead that is 80p
I’ve always done them myself but last year the empty ewe lambs that were killed while I was lambing I got my shearer in to belly as I didn’t have time, 50p 👍🏻 Mine are all sheared in august and I’ve found bellying the fat lambs this autumn way easier with less grease - current cutter and comb must have trimmed 300 bellies and 600 arses since putting on but it is starting to tramline 🤣

Bellying shorn lambs are a dream. I had 500 Romney tup lambs that had been on roots last feb, that was a nightmare and definitely earned my 40p!

I had less than 200 lambs this year, so hardly been in a mart, but I used to like to sell them with the option of clipped if they wanted. Used to work out about 50:50. But at Longtown they are all clipped before sale now, the lads start at 0430 and as soon as everything is clipped, they are away, be about lunch time. I was lucky the boss was still about cleaning up and he did mine with a cordless set.

I left about 1.30 and they were still clipping then.SS sometimes stays and goes in the ring and buys the best butchers lambs afterwards.

Hells bells I’m glad I’m not a pig man 😳😥

In the week ended 27 November, the UK-spec SPP fell by 0.72p on last week, to 141.15p/kg.

Estimated slaughter for the week was 185,900 head. This was lower than last week’s figure of 196,200, but 15,500 head higher than the same week last year. Reports indicate that although some abattoirs undertook a Saturday kill, numbers of particularly low-priced pigs (intended for minimal butchery) were once again limited.

The average carcase weight rose compared to the previous week, to 93.43kg.

Unfortunately, there was insufficient data available to produce a 7kg or 30kg weaner price this week. However, for the week ending 20 November, the UK-spec APP rose by 0.30p to stand at 147.69p/kg. The gap between the two price series widened to 5.82p.

That's encouraging for them that the weekly kill is up year on year, unless it was low due to something covid related this time last year?

You're not the only one.

If ever the beef and sheep job ever looks like it's falling into the control of too few hands, the events of late 2021 should be dragged up and used to beat everybody about the head with, until it gets re-fragmented into the hands of thousands of producers, hundreds of markets and dozens and dozens of slaughterhouses.

There's a big lesson to be learnt from how the pig job is structured.

Should never be done at market and we should resist what is another marketing expense
Seems too be a northern thing dont know any markets round here bellying lambs out and our trade seems too match really?? Bellied and arsed all mine out a month ago before they went on turnips just for convenience but normally just put them straight in
