RED MARKET
INCLUDING CHRISTMAS FATSTOCK SHOW FOR CATTLE

FORWARD
York Auction Centre had 520 head of stock forward including 268 Cattle, 139 Sheep and 113 Pigs at their weekly sale of Prime stock.

CATTLE

What a busy day at the Christmas show. The pork pie competition had entries from Chidswell Farm Shop, W Fletcher & Son Ltd, Rob Featherstone Butchers, BW & D J Glaves & Sons Ltd, Knavesmire Butchers and D Wilson Family Butchers. The sausage competition also had entries from the above plus M & K Quality Butchers.

Huge congratulations to B W & D J Glaves & Sons who won both the pork pie and sausage competition.

Turning to the cattle with a great entry of 81 show cattle. The cattle were judged this year by Matthew and Ben Kneafsey of M & K Quality Butchers, Bishopthorpe Road, York. They chose a homebred Limousin heifer from J R Johnson & Son, Flat Top Farm, Terrington which weighed 526kg and was purchased by the judge for 540p/kg, grossing an excellent £2837.

The reserve champion chosen by Matthew and Ben was a Limousin steer from Wagstaff Bros, Westfield Farm, Sutton on the Forest which weighed 546kg and was purchased by R Pearson, Oakenshaw, Bradford for 385p/kg, grossing £2099.37.

The Champion bull was a British Blue from S J Wakefield, Thirkleby Barugh, weighing 724kg, purchased by R Pearson, Oakenshaw, Bradford for 300p/kg amounting to £2168.38.

The reserve champion bull was shown by H W Cowling & Son, Rudding House, Pannal, a Limousin weighing 728kg and selling again to R Pearson for 292p/kg, £2122.12.

There was a tremendous show of quality cattle in all classes and vendors are to be congratulated. 2021 has been another difficult year as covid doesn’t seem to be going away.

The auctioneers here at YAC extend their congratulations and thanks to the vendors, buyers, drovers and accounts staff who have all worked very hard to ensure that the live auctions have continued successfully and outperformed the deadweight all year.

This year we combined forces with the Yorkshire Agricultural society to raise money for Future Farms, women in Farming, FCN and our market chaplains. Thank you to Charles Mills for attending and explaining their charitable work, in total we raised £1261.

They are FA, thinking keeping out till end of December approx 18 months old then in onto TMR and maize, then turn out mid may and sell June/July 24/26 months
I'll wouldn't turn them out again tbf if you have them in for three months ish you should of got them going for the finisher, if turn them out for two ish months they go back to start with and then the buyer will have to start over again... Imo

Did he get carried away running them and had to take them back home. 😂
If he did he didnt learn so fast cos he ended up with quite a few more!
Suppose they see it as good advertising for their shops when they are seen to be buying the best.
Was a bit disappointed with wigton Christmas show report, there are a lot of tremendous cattle at that sale at big money but they never said who bought them, wouldve thought the successful purchasers would have wanted the advertising and publicity after spending those prices.
