Store cattle trade is serious everywhere, i thought perhaps numbers were short but whitland has almost 500 tomorrow and hereford has 600 on thursday so theres still a few about! If firms drop the beef price they will be lynched now
The cattle price could suddenly drop just like the sheep price has done this week!

Was talking to a lad yesterday, his fert cost £16000 last year, it is going to be £55,000 this year when ge gets round to it, i dont think many of us have crossed that bridge yet!
If we use same amount of sheepfeed this winter it will come to £4000 more.
These costs are getting serious!
Its unsustainable thats what it is tbh, regardless of improve prices.

Yes but lambing ease has to be a consideration too. My shapier ewes are still markedly wedge shaped, with the thick end of the wedge over the more valuable cuts 👍
Well yes you look after the part they actually use in this country and has the most value
Seems a bit of a cop out grading narrow shoulders. You wiil know better than me but maybe they need some better excuses

Yes exactly. 20p a kilo on a lamb is nothing compared to that lot!!
We can cope if the end product goes up in line with these costs, but it’s a bad do if it doesn’t!!
I’m not sure talking the price down in these publications is very well timed at the moment

Funny that, I had lambs grade moderately there too and I wasn't the only one. Farm stock Scotland sent a delegation down to have a look. I was told that the regular grader seemed to overemphasise the importance of the shoulder, so anything with a moderate fore was an O grade, never mind what was behind it. Never mind it's meant to be an assessment of three areas and the shoulder is only 10% of the carcass value (I believe).
I meant may lambs grade badly in general, mules, welsh and Suffolk cross go dead. Rpf is flat rate and don’t mend them up to 4L’s and even 4h isn’t much off. My lambs come fat and poor shape off turnips usually.

That's what I was told anyway. Perhaps part of the problem is that there is no oversight of sheep grading, although there was word that it was coming in. Cattle grading, weighing and dressing is checked regularly by the RPA man.

No ,the people we supply should be told the price isnt enough.
I had a feedrep in yard before, i said 'feeds dear but youl be selling it are you?'
He says 'yeah ,but dunno whats gonna happen in a year or 2, most of the farms i go on the farmers are in their 50s and 60s , if not older, with no sons coming on, they are thinking of scaling the business down or getting out'
Things are going to get interesting in a year or 2 thats for sure,
The government and joe public must not have heard of the saying ' dont bite the hand that feeds you'!

I have said it a few times….in the next 5 years there’s going to be a serious shake up in farming and I think livestock will be the main culprits….too many years of sh!t prices. Even the current lamb price is crap

my whole fkn career has been riding out one storm or another ,BSE loss of MMB / f+M x2 / brexit ,covid rpa changes every few years , and general prices of stock for last 40 years its exhausting not being able to concentrate on the actual job of farming and going forward
