Why doesn’t beef smell when it’s being cooked like it did years ago….I remember you could smell it outside years ago. Now it barely has that beautiful smell

What's the difference in price for store cattle going into an afu compared to normal store cattle not going into one?

Store cattle over 400kg sold in an orange market tb sale wouldnt be any less and i heard one buyer say he had stopped going to tb sales as he thought he could buy them cheaper in a normal sale. The cattle under 400kg would be less money as the afu's dont want longterm cattle . More competition selling in markets but sometimes selling direct to someone if you know the price is right is far less hassle, no transport or market fees, no getting hurt putting the tickets on and less stress all round. You dont get to show your cattle off though.

I would hazzard a guess that an older 30-40 mth slower grown beast would taste better than a 12-18mth intensively finished one but if both were hung for the same time i doubt there would be any difference in tenderness.

Light cattle you will get hammered but strong stores are no different, I always sell to AFUs saves the hassle, risk and cost of pre movement testing

Cattle that have been fed a lot of wheat for a long period get that smell, long soft feet to go with it, long term acidosis

Your right, any good stockman i know checks his animals regularly.

We only keep bulls now, but we will check during the night if ones not right. When we had pigs farrowing we had some long nights but i enjoyed it

If you ever see any of those homekill videos from NZ where the slaughter man just shoots the beasts in the field as they walk over to see them . That beef must taste good due to the fact the beast is so relaxed as it’s killed in its own environment .

Some special hoggs up to 194£ at ua yesterday, one guy not far from me, feeds ever lmb he has inside, beltex x and tex x tex hoggs. Amazing fat meaty hoggs.

I’m not going to name any butchers but he wasn’t who I was thinking of…my point is supermarket beef is no different to butchers beef imo. I have noticed that buyers are now wanting the cattle a lot thicker and a lot fatter than they used to. Never could get my head around buying lean ones but I guess the housewife didn’t want fat then moaned the beef was tasteless

The best steaks I ever eaten were in the USA and all the beef will be corn fed over there this grass fed being better is just a marketing gimmick
