It all depends on your costs though doesn't it, my indoor lambing ewes are have run at 180% rearing lambs where as my outdoor lambing ewes will be about 150% but have cost a hell of a lot less and are less work for me.
You could say the same about a continental thoughId be dissapointed if could only sell 165% of a mule though.
Yes but some people don't get any of those problems though....A lot of lambs disappear, dead ewes after tupping, abortions, deaths at lambing, predators, deaths up to sale soon pull the average back
How to wreak your day, count how many lambs where scanned and how many you sell. I won’t be doing that again, I try my best but there always going to die.We try our absolute best all year to keep losses down & do the job right, nothing gets neglected and we don't have any rented in land here there & everywhere that we would constantly have to travel to, so our farming is what I would call - all under control but when I calculate what we scanned & what we actually sell the difference is criminal I'm like where the fudge have they all gone that can't be right.................!!!! There's always something dropping off they never stop dieing & I mounts up over 12 months I guess
Seem to remember reading the national average for losses from scanning to turnout/ sale is something like 15% with some up to and over 20%A lot of lambs disappear, dead ewes after tupping, abortions, deaths at lambing, predators, deaths up to sale soon pull the average back
I think the scanning to sale numbers are really something that’s many miles apartSeem to remember reading the national average for losses from scanning to turnout/ sale is something like 15% with some up to and over 20%
The one I got can run off a battery. The shed I put it in doesn't have power (yet?).Well I have the cameras but having bother with the sim box thing so will likely be fit up for next year now. They are good while they are on but need electric to box and camera
Mine runs off a battery but needs a sim box which goes flat within a day hence the power neededThe one I got can run off a battery. The shed I put it in doesn't have power (yet?).
My outside lambing ewes are running at 4% losses to this point (another 7 days of first cycle) but have in really lost 12% because lambs are ending up as pets, dry weather means I spot the hungry lambs before they die.Seem to remember reading the national average for losses from scanning to turnout/ sale is something like 15% with some up to and over 20%
Ah the old bfl, someone left the window open and now she’s died.I can’t believe anyone with sheep calculates what they scan to what they sell….it doesn’t matter what you jab or dose them with the ungrateful tw@ts still die.
wouldn’t matter if you had them in the front room watching tv with you (and I’m sure a few farmers probably do)…you’d look over one night and it would be laid dead on the settee
Aye, those wicked draughts get them every timeAh the old bfl, someone left the window open and now she’s died.
We sold 175% off 900 swaledales and 100 mule ewes. It's just what I read in the stocktake report however you do see comments from people saying they're happy with a 150% scanning when the main focus is on reducing outlay.
I would feel I was doing a bad job if that's all I could manage from average lowland maternal ewes. Getting consistently above 165% sold is hard though.
Scanning is just a guide and a management tool.I think the scanning to sale numbers are really something that’s many miles apart
There’s a lot to be done from one to another
Like going round with a blindfold on though if you dont take any notice,I can’t believe anyone with sheep calculates what they scan to what they sell….it doesn’t matter what you jab or dose them with the ungrateful tw@ts still die.

Yeh but you drench everything 10 times a year and routinely jab lambs with antibiotics so all you are doing is robbing people/farmers of the future for your own immediate gain!We sold 175% off 900 swaledales and 100 mule ewes.
Only ever thought of us as average farmers.
Maybe the swaledale and mule shouldnt be as derided as it it
(and i dont mind criticising them if i see fit!)
I’ve had more lambs to the lab for autopsy’sLike going round with a blindfold on though if you dont take any notice,
Some things you have no control over but some you have and can do something about it.
Yours probably is the right attitude to have in some ways though!
I never bother going to the lab with any, maybe been twice in my life.. hardly ever bother a vet either for sheep, if its deed its deed!I’ve had more lambs to the lab for autopsy’s
Than the FBI have had dead bodies….they’ve had everything preventative that you can buy…..now they say a sheep doesn't die for no reason but I can guarantee you that’s bolloks….they sometimes die just for a giggle
