There was plenty of lambs in the seventies last backend, you could have filled your boots with good lambs in the seventies and sold them for £120+ just saying….
Yes there where. We sold 200 healthy vaccinated Suffolk wethers for £73 in October. I was happy with that at the time and the man who bought them would have got out of them well.

No he means Egger at Hexham , its rather big and has a bit of an appetite for timber .

Led to believe from man putting timber into egger, its biggest employer in Northumberland after county council. Still at fore front of ply wood innovation, his words. Parts of factory top secret as they will not allow their unique technique s to be copied. Be some number of individuals and small firms that indirectly rely on them.

I love the initials game when I know who the feck the northern gang are on about 😂
CB and AS do my haulage from the Northern marts both are small family business's who always do a good job, 1 of them not over keen to "overfill" the wagon though 😂
JW usually does southern cattle coming up here, again cattle look well after a long journey.
Worth their weight in gold all these small haulage companies.

A Few more initials for you to think about over the weekend 😂 😂

An what the feck is Christine bleakley doing driving cattle about😱
All these 'high profile' types have suddenly realised what a great job hauling livestock is - all that crawling about between sheep decks to shut the gates, getting shat on by grass fed cattle not to mention all that washing out and backing a decker into a farmyard that was designed for horses and carts.

Change of subject. Anyone else thinking of getting rid of a load of older (4crop +) ewes and replacing them with home bred ewe lambs. Culls look to be a good trade and smaller stores in the £70’s that can run dry for 12 months. That’s what I’m thinking, cut the breeding flock by 25% next year saving feed and see what next year brings.
I think it’s a great idea!! As long as everyone else does it.🤣

Whilst I was stood watching hoggs not moving up the sorting pen I was talking to a chap who said back when they sold in pens there were certain buyers who would stand next to the pens they wanted and it stopped others bidding against him so basically set the price. If that’s true it’s got to be better that they go through a ring
how do they stop someone bidding ? the auctioneer is stood up high on the raceway and will see someone stood back bidding, I know I have done it much to a few peoples confusion

This past breeding season I cut concentrate feed bill by 90% with a better crop of lambs. Will retire about 10% of the older girls and replace with 3 times the number with last year's replacements. Will not feed concentrate again this year until prelambing. If I have another kind winter this year, and prices stay good, I should have an even better crop next year. A bad winter will need some adjustments but hey I'm in sunny south Wales where the risk of a bad winter is alot less than for those up north of me. Worry more about summer droughts.

That's how it's done at Monmouth market, move through the pens quickly. Good auctioneer will see any bidder not hanging on pen rails.

I can’t believe sheep are still sold in pens. How do buyers handle them if they are all towards the back of the pens…..seems very antiquated
How do they handle them running round a ring?
South Molton sell through the ring and it's not often the buyers bother to chase the sheep round the ring to handle them.
Old employer used to say you know they're pushing if they handle them.

I would say the vast majority of lambs south of Derbyshire are sold in pens. All fine selling lambs through a ring if well set up and plenty of staff, but weighing, penning and then running 2/3000 lambs back round through a ring is a lot of work. The only pens I don't like are Melton's as they are deep and narrow. It's easy enough in most pens to handle lambs and push them round. Can guarantee the worst one will always make its way to the front of the pen.

For the amount of commision they are getting they should be able to afford plenty of staff especially with recent values
