Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Big drought in France hitting their wheat crop,
weather concerns elsewhere in the world.
It's not all about Ukraine although even if they
get more corn moved their spring planted is down
a fair percentage.
You would have to be very optimistic to get down
to £200 or for cake to drop £200t.
You might be surprised

people will have adapted to using less cake and less fert, the big outfits will be worried

I wonder if Larry has ever had to import British beef into Ireland instead of dumping his polish beef sorry I mean Irish beef here…

You have to wonder if it’s in some way political, has he been told to look after the Irish farmer and hold things down here. If beef doesn’t climb here there will be none left in a few years an he will have the job of filling the void with Irish/polish or wherever else he can set up a plant to take advantage of cheap labour an lower standards.

Good point. They seem to be throwing money at Irish farmers with emergency payments for this and that.

Oh the government have finally realised they’ll be no food before long and are now panicking? Oh what a shame. I hope they starve

Or conversely much better domestic pig price ,
more sows ,more pigs, more cake.
Big numbers of sows have been culled abroad
so it's only a matter of a few months and our
pigmen should be much happier.:)
The pig price this week is 40p up on three months ago, the backlog has all but gone and every pig leaving farms last week was blowing as much money as they were just after Christmas. The price needs to go up another 40p to break even, so another 60p plus COP increases for 2-3 years minimum to claw back to square one and recover losses. Will it happen, time will tell but not many pig farmers have the luxury of time anymore

And what do pig farmers do when prices are on the up… serve more sows and produce more pigs turning a shortage in to a glut and the boom and bust cycle continues

For as long as i can remember pigs have been either make or break and not much inbetween.
Grandad says the worst he had it was boom and bust 3 times in 18 months. Then he got a dose of Rhinitis. Vet advised him too destock for 3 months and start again. Grandad said he’d better idea! All the pigs went within a month and replaced them with calves that were for peanuts after BSE. Had no pigs here for 20 years then till I started buying and feeding a handful

Dear Woodheads supplier,

In recognition of the great work being done by so many of you already on our Net Zero programme, we are today announcing a new ‘Sustainable Beef and Lamb Scheme’ for farmers. Participating farms will be asked to measure their carbon footprint by our carbon consultant company Map of Ag, test the health of their soils, audit their farm’s biodiversity, and monitor both resources and waste on their farms on an annual basis - and then develop resulting action plans.

We’re working with Red Tractor to assess the programme under their new ‘Environment’ module. This means that any accreditation you get can be used by you for any customer - not just Morrisons. We’re also going to cover the cost of accreditation from Red Tractor in the first year as part of the programme.

But that’s not all: we’re also going to be unveiling a list of free advice from trusted experts you can access as well as discounts on products and services available to farmers who are accredited on the programme.

And we’re starting to offer payment premiums for sustainable beef: this will launch with Morrisons contracted dairy beef suppliers, where a 10p/kg premium will be paid for any cattle finishing under 18 months’ old on a sustainable diet, who are also part of our net zero agriculture programme. We’ll also be extending premiums for suckler and store finisher cattle in the months to come.

We’ll be in touch in the coming weeks with full details about the standard, how you can take part, and importantly, how you can access the incentive packages that go with this.

We know that getting to net zero through sustainable farming is a challenge, but we want to continue to work with you to champion great British food from farms we know and trust.

Kind regards
Woodheads Livestock Team
