Costs the exact same to feed as the sim luings and the luings . And they like a bite of heather too. Don’t knock it until you try it . I’ve luings and sim luings give me more hassle than the good cows and get less for them cull
I said their genetics . Use the brain . That means their daughters
You need and another year if your keepimg daughters as no income , none of it very pretty, like for like breed to breed its all relative .

The problem with sucklers everyones costs are different,if you outwinter its a different ball game than bedding on straw etc etc, sucklers only really work being farmed on 2nd quality land, you have vets bills fert etc to factor in,if you keep your own heifers you reduce your replacement costs, yes the have a value but have not cost you a fortune.

Processors have actively dis-incentivised small farms so they can get their cattle from a few big units.
These big units then have to source their cattle from the smaller farms.
The fat cow price is keeping the breeding sales buoyant, similarly with ewes.
If you look at the figures, its the killing of breeding stock in both cattle and sheep that are maintaining meat supplies.
That is not sustainable.
And keeping suckler cows without BPS and with ELMS looking as it is, isn't sustainable either.
I appreciate what you are saying, I can see how the margins of sucklers is and will increasingly be under pressure. As I stated afew pages back I have recently sold bulls and with increasing input costs they will have to rise iro £1 kg LW to maintain margins.
I have been out to Weanling sales and calf sales this last week and I am amazed by the buoyancy and confidence in the trade, auction rings are full and men falling over themselves to buy at record prices

Which is why it's dangerous to ever take the general feelings/impression of the job from an online forum. 3 maybe 4 regular posters giving their opinion plus a few others occasionally doesn't mean anything in the wider world. 99.9% of farmers don't post on here so why should anything stated on here be a general trend. Not having a dig at anyone just stating facts.

Two reasons , 1 plenty want need cattle on farm
2 plenty don’t want hassle of cows and calving , they know if they dont pay for the stores their wont be any to buy future and also their is still a bit of competition although its gettimg less as more dealers less farmers buying .

I think there are 'echo chambers' everywhere. TFF, market, NFU etc...
At the moment, every farmer should be feeling good because our returns are the highest they've ever been.
I'm not sure how good anyone will feel by the end of the year when all the bills are paid.

If any of this is directed at me that’s absolutely fine
It’s for everyone’s benefit that they realise their costs and if it makes them think about that then it can only do good
No one came along and said they could keep their cows for nowt which we all know you can’t

I agree that you can't keep a cow for nowt, but it is possible to keep a cow without paying anything.
