Are you not on about a dispersal any more?I said their genetics . Use the brain . That means their daughters
You would have to breed them and keep them it’s not for free you know

I have bought a cow before believe it or notCosts the exact same to feed as the sim luings and the luings . And they like a bite of heather too. Don’t knock it until you try it . I’ve luings and sim luings give me more hassle than the good cows and get less for them cull
Probably won’t end up as good as that average would be nearer fiveAye and thats a perfect 4 years good bad the ugly dont all have perfect for years, and add another year for a bit profit and another year for problems etc.

No been funny but why keep the luings then?Hilly it Costs the exact same to feed as the sim luings and the luings . And they like a bite of heather too. Don’t knock it until you try it . I’ve luings and sim luings give me more hassle than the good cows and get less for them cull
I find its all relative , ie My mate has Galloways biggest cost is ear tagg haulage commission bull and a tiny bit of rent , another pall has the best blue calves going tops market , ive £50 bet says the gallowys net proffits is same or more … like for like all relative .The problem with sucklers everyones costs are different,if you outwinter its a different ball game than bedding on straw etc etc, sucklers only really work being farmed on 2nd quality land, you have vets bills fert etc to factor in,if you keep your own heifers you reduce your replacement costs, yes the have a value but have not cost you a fortune.
They are getting old now . Just gradually getting them away . I’ve only three left but one is a great cow and she will stay here .used to outwinter but built a shed and life’s easier for me. So why not keep a few better cows that you get more for their calves .No been funny but why keep the luings then?
Pets cost money as well , a great cow rears a great calf every year when they stop doing that Fray Bentos is their for them .They are getting old now . Just gradually getting them away . I’ve only three left but one is a great cow and she will stay here .
I appreciate what you are saying, I can see how the margins of sucklers is and will increasingly be under pressure. As I stated afew pages back I have recently sold bulls and with increasing input costs they will have to rise iro £1 kg LW to maintain margins.Processors have actively dis-incentivised small farms so they can get their cattle from a few big units.
These big units then have to source their cattle from the smaller farms.
The fat cow price is keeping the breeding sales buoyant, similarly with ewes.
If you look at the figures, its the killing of breeding stock in both cattle and sheep that are maintaining meat supplies.
That is not sustainable.
And keeping suckler cows without BPS and with ELMS looking as it is, isn't sustainable either.

I have been out to Weanling sales and calf sales this last week and I am amazed by the buoyancy and confidence in the trade, auction rings are full and men falling over themselves to buy at record prices
Two reasons , 1 plenty want need cattle on farmI appreciate what you are saying, I can see how the margins of sucklers is and will increasingly be under pressure. IShame more do not contribute rather than just looking.Which is why it's dangerous to ever take the general feelings/impression of the job from an online forum. 3 maybe 4 regular posters giving their opinion plus a few others occasionally doesn't mean anything in the wider world. 99.9% of farmers don't post on here so why should anything stated on here be a general trend. Not having a dig at anyone just stating facts.
Some are quite good at shouting people down when an alternative viewpoint is put though...IShame more do not contribute rather than just looking.

Its a big bad forum you have to be brave , say the wrong thing and you get crucified but … why care about that .Some are quite good at shouting people down when an alternative viewpoint is put though...
and saying the wrong thing and being wrong are not necessarily the same thing. Its a big bad forum you have to be brave , say the wrong thing and you get crucified but … why care about that .
If any of this is directed at me that’s absolutely fine
It’s for everyone’s benefit that they realise their costs and if it makes them think about that then it can only do good
No one came along and said they could keep their cows for nowt which we all know you can’t
