Well after 2 years of culls being very similar in price to replacements it’s a habit you should have got out of!
It’s great and long May it continue. ANYTHING that puts a foot wrong can be culled without costing a fortune too replace. Was different when shearlings were £130 and culls £60. But not now.
You can buy in problems though unless you keep enough gimmers to fill the void

Losses does put a lot of folks off sheep though
Some of us are used too it 😂

some of my friends, they are unbelievable. Whenever a sheep/lamb dies there is a full blown inquest. Arguments the lot.
Sheep die, it’s what they do. I see no gain at all from worrying about the dead ones. As long as it’s not negligence causing the deaths they do it for sport!! 😆

Never get near. Ewe lambs and breeder ewes go totally separate winter farms from the feeder sheep. The ground we use for dumping as they arrive has its own handling pens so that solves that side too
Thought you would be organised. That’s what puts me off buying stores in. Take some keep but not enough for the whole winter.

I keep them separate when they arrive until they are dipped or injected then they are always separate from the ewes
They haven’t been as bad for itch up here lately last few years out of the marts most folk are on top of it but there’s odd ones you would never buy off

Every single winter I get 1 bunch somewhere that start itching after Christmas. Can usually be traced to a neighbouring keep farm who’s sheep arrive mid December. Yes I know I could give up the ground that borders, but the way the other fella is spread over the same rough area as me I’d be on a severe loser very quickly. And that dirty bugger would be picking up the ground I left…
For preference I dip them all within 1/2 weeks of arrival. I do use Dectomax occasionally when dipping is not workable.

Some folks just have it continuously and never get on top of it. We always used to dip ewes in late August here but many times like you say they would pick up the itch off elsewhere and we would have to start again.
