If you milked friesians @Mc115reed you would have a lovely supply of good calves done right from day one just saying
Sounds like you want to be putting a parlour in yourself your that keen on milking 😂 … I’ll say it again… Iv no intention of ever putting another milking cluster on a cow in my life time ever again, I’ll be dead before anyone drags me down into a parlour ever again

You sound like you have different class of women, some ours who pick up the kids are some real stunners, but come to think of it it could be the nannies or opares picking them up. 🤔
They were all middle class types at my daughters school, some good lookers. One of the mothers was a well known northern TV news presenter, very friendly and chatty, talked to everyone alike.

I’d still be milking @Mc115reed

plenty of cows about atm.

I love dairy cows. If I had a ring fence that is what I would do. Are you softening yet?
So would I, I would love to milk 80 cows once a day, milk them by 6 am and the rest of the day to f**k about with beef calves and sheep. Much better cash flow than just beef and sheep and proved yourself with good beef calves and winter keep for the store lambs.

I would love to know where all these cheap 6 month old stirks and/ or all these 12 week old weaned calves that you say are not making any more than 12 months ago are?? because trade for both groups has been a lot dearer the last 2/3 months than 12 months ago!

Still money in it for the weaned calve producer if they buy the calves right and do them well.

As for the question about getting into cattle cheaply, only one route really and that is do as someone else above suggested and that is set up a TB unit, buy TB calves and then get them reared/ TB clear and sold on, you will pick these calves up very cheaply and well below open market values.

As for rearing calves under contract, the answer to that is would be no, if you are going to do that then you would be better off working for someone else rearing their calves for £15/20 hour!
I wouldn't be saying the 5/6 mth calves would be cheap but I think they are a better way of getting your numbers up than rearing baby calves unless you can source them direct off farm but even then the costs are horrifically high .
There's a difference between 'cheap' stirks and 'worth the money ' stirks . It quite important you know where they come from especially regarding BVD . There a vendor been taking them to Hfd market recently and they good cattle and are well buyable at 5 mths old and you know he does a decent job of it . I think he also sells on SML . We have had a few sent to us off him and though they might have been a few quid more than others they are now standing out among the others .

Probably not allowed but B&B pigs are a quick turnaround on cash. Mate of mine took on a small tenancy, concreted a shed and seems to be doing pretty well now. Muck for straw with someone.

I didn’t say they were cheap did I. If you read my post. I said they weren’t anymore money than last year at this time. Given that fat cattle are approx £200+ more a head. They’ve not altered. This time last year I was selling 5/6 month old blue steers for £740 this year it takes a 8/9 month old animal to make £800 given the extra age I’d say no more money. Lots of Angus reared calves circa 16 weeks old on Facebook in the mid £400s. I struggle to see how there is ‘money’ as you put it, to be earned out of that.
But as always I bow to your superior knowledge in this sector!
