BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 18th July 2022

Contrary to expectations rather more stock arrived than anticipated in the light of the extreme weather warning.

We ended up with 266 cattle and 970 sheep and an expectation that store cattle which had been listed and not presented would be with us next week on the 25th.

Measures were in place to deal with the high temperatures with stock given extra space, ventilation fans in operation in the cattle shed and all stock watered after the sale finished at 12.30pm. Purchasers were encouraged to remove stock as soon as possible with very little left by mid-afternoon.

Just 119 store & breeding cattle on parade, but enough buying power to maintain recent levels of trade.

Steers hit £1,390 and heifers £1,330. In the breeding section a Lim Stock Bull made £1,500 and a cow & calf outfit £1,340.

59 finished cattle were forward with most major buyers operating and a decent trade throughout. Top figures 296p and £1,939 per head.

Heifers averaged 235p, Steers 241p and Bulls 255p.

In the OTM & Feeding Cows section there were 67 forward with recent values holding up. Top figures 223p and £2,152 with the average back a bit at 173.6p.

21 calves on offer with bulls to £385 and heifers £302.

The sheep department was remarkably busy with 738 lambs forward. Producers clearly concerned about the keep situation were anxious to market lambs and buyers seemed keen to buy them. Top figures 327p and £155.55 per head.

The SQQ average was a respectable 300.1p making an average lamb in the 39-45kg bracket came to £126.10 not bad for the time of year. In the cull ewe department there were 204 on offer with ewes to £205 to average £117.82.

Respectable SQQ on lambs there 👍 and the cull cow average seems well up there too!
Still don’t know why they split the ewe lamb sale in September though, won’t be 10k total, you’d think it was too expensive to run the mart an extra day when they could all be fit into one?

Maybe.

This time last year we were burning out but down south was wading in grass so buyers were keen for lots of lambs

This year it's looking like another drought up here... but the South is already burned out.

Are the buyer's going to want lambs if there's not much grass?? 😕
I was over at Bishop Auckland for a funeral yesterday and it’s well and truly burnt up, loads of fodder been made, but where there’s stock is brown.

Just not sure I’d call 700 lambs “remarkably busy” 😳

Bakewell always seems to get a good cull cow average 👍

And if they had all the ewe lambs and all the Thursday fat lambs and culls on the one day then they'd be far too busy 🙄😅

STORE SHEEP

C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their opening sale of 2,098 store lambs at Longtown on Tuesday 19th July 2022.
A good show of store lambs attracted a full ring of buyers, including several from a distance. Strong lambs if anything would be scarce on the day, trade was much better than anticipated. An overall average of £85.15, which was £3.15 up on the year. Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage considering the many buyers that were present.
Top £138 & £122 for Texels from Aimshaugh, others to £121, £118, £117 The Laws; Bleu Du Maines to £117 Townfoot; Suffolks to £104 Rosebank, £97 Longrigg; Charollais £100 Penny Hill Park; Beltex to £122 (X2) Aimshaugh, £117 Moorside; Romneys to £89, £84 Felkington; Dutch Spotted to £79 Whintingstown; Cheviots to £70 Penny Hill Park; Greyfaces to £87 Whintingstown; Cheviot Mules to £91 Hawthornbank.

Ok but nothing exciting
Those Texels were nice sorts of gimmers so I’ve been told
