Stock should not leave the Mart until payed for

I noticed a sign at the pay window at Worcester market yesterday, saying that all stock had to be paid for before removal from the market. Any accounts that weren’t settled were to be charged at 6% over base rate (so no more than a lot of unsecured overdrafts).

I dare say different rules would apply to larger buyers though, those that do real damage when they go bang.

So what would happen if there was no Marts?
As an outsider I don’t think it would be a bad idea. Make people actually think about what (if anything) they produce before they do it.
I think the days of producing what you want, how you want, when you want are coming to an end. Most businesses that sell something have to work very hard for sales, often involving large sales teams at huge cost. If it doesn’t pay or they can’t sell they stop producing.
Farmers seem immune to this, just produce what they want then expect buyers to want and pay good money for it, without any effort other than hauling stock to mart.
Without auctions.and.open competition primary producers will be picked off by the robber baron major buyers and then look out. I for one have no intention of becoming a modern day serf. Having failed so far to undermine auctions by introducing whole life assurance as a means of introducing integrated supply chains to the beef industry I wouldn't be surprised if the major buyers are not behind the collapse of this market. It only takes one player to be even more slow settling their account for the whole house of cards to collapse. If this is repeated elsewhere my apparent paranoia might not seem so daft!

Do farmers take stock from market without paying, they don’t Round here.
I bought some stores out of a Yorkshire market last year (one I hadn't bought out for 2 or 3 years) and when I went to pay I was surprised to receive 'a rebate'.

When I asked the lass in the pay office what it was for, she replied, "It's because you are paying on the day".

From that, I could only deduce there was a fair bit of stock that was not being paid for 'on the day'.

Ok so if farmers still need marts and credit to buyers needs to stop, perhaps a group of farmers should get together in Cheshire and run a new market with their rules? Now would be a good time to jump in surely?
Own a bit of the chain and help market your own stock.

Don't think they own it, just awarded the contract to run the auctions. When Cally Marts went bust they asked for tenders & UA got it. (Beats me why - gives them the monopoly locally)
Yes it’s like a local auction here. Owned by a group of farmers as shareholders and ran by an auction company
