Indeed no strings attached but I'm a headstrong bugger so sod them, I'm not going to do anything that makes BS thinks they're doing enough.
The beet price isn't enough and there poxy pee poor offer of 25% up front isn't enough.
I agree the beet price isn’t enough. But I’ll take the cash upfront if they are offering. In fact I’ll need it. Bank account will be running on fumes by harvest.

Not accepting the 25% is not going to get your message across .. the only thing that will do that is not growing it…

Rear mounted hoes….
Only ever used front mounted. Any good or a nightmare to be accurate with? I don’t have gps or “the gift” so my rows aren’t the straightest as @robbie constantly reminds me….
Instinctively seem like a recipe for disaster but none would be sold if they were that bad?!?

They’re ok if you can attach some sort of marker on the front to watch; like a dangly bit of heavy chain you can line up over a row. But if your rows a little ‘wriggly’ you may find you need such a big gap in the hoe so as to not kill any beet then it misses too many weeds. Front mounted infinitely better. Unless it’s a rear one with camera guidance of course like a robocrop. Have you got a front linkage? Stanhay are easy to convert from rear to front mounted 🤷‍♂️

Never had any problems with a rear mounted Kongskilde 12 row hoe. I used to have the mirrors set so I could see two of the units and where the guide discs were running at a glance. The same Fiat F140 done the drilling and the hoeing which helped. Went through 600 acres of beet numerous times for weed beet control with that set up in everything from west Norfolk flint to mid Norfolk Clay for 4 years.

Years ago dad demoed a kongskilde but didn't like it as he found the discs caused it to jump about when going over flints, he bought a FMA instead but for little beet settings all the side tin's was a right pain so he had a Webb front mounted for when the beet were small.

From my experience 6 row with a tractor at 60inch so the hoe is offset is a right twit to use.
9 row straddling 3 was nice and now 12 row straddling 4 is ace.

We don't bother with the front hoe now just use 12 rear mounted.
I hoe as quick as I dare drive, without sounding silly, upto 9kmh with a gap between the A hoes the width of the palm of my hand. We use the widest A hoes available on the back of each unit and with some speed they through soil(and stones unfortunately) onto the rows and "earth" them up and smother the weeds.
The same tractor on the same tyres drills and hoes and it seems to follow the drill wheels very well, we don't have the silly single rib tyres on the hoe either, just 13inch car tyres.
Important thing is getting the hoe set right so it pulls true and square, side hills can be a problem but you soon get the hang of it.

I always found that a higher forward speed worked better as well once the beet were big enough to take it.
Getting the hoe set right on the lift arms was always a challenge. Curved headlands could be as much fun as side hills until you got your eye in as well. Still preferred the rear Kongskilde to the front mounted Stanhay I used when I worked elsewhere, (not far from @spin cycle i believe) used to always block up with weed beet.

Think we’ll take the 25% now, overdraft rate is 8.5%, cash flow is taking a hit with machinery servicing, spares, diesel, chems all at astronomical cost, compared to the crops we’ve sold thisfinancial year.

Hopefully with cereals at higher prices cash flow will be much better in the run up to Christmas.

Potatoes have got to start with a 3 next season!

We occasionally use our old Ferguson rear mounted hoe. It has a seat on it for the other operator to steer it relative to the tractor. Two man job. Cross the headland tramline slowly or you can flip the hoe man off his seat.🤣

And of course the love affair with the mighty Standen Cyclone
Last year this year. Rod links very worn now and hard to find. Could upgrade to webs but expensive. Also you can’t change the number of straight and downer links in a web for different scrubbing settings. For sugar beet no straight links equals maximum tumble and scrub up the back elevator. But that’s too much for big soft fodder so change to a straight link every 5 down links to help beet up the elevator and minimise bruising and skinning.

We still have our steerage hoe 🙈 it's in the hedge, waiting.....!

Now have this for our massive beet acreage (front wheels in storage, waiting to go on)
