There’s a new variety called Nelson that’s a late driller into april. I’m sure somebody on here had a few tonne available as they’d not planted due to the land going into maize instead. Think it was either @walesfarmer@warksfarmer@wartonfarmer@walshleshly
Good morning Beefsmith, as the UK Agent for Nelson we would not subscribe to it being suitable for sowing in April. The latest sowing date we have from a seed crop grown for us near Boston, Lincs was driled approx March 10-12th where it performed well. If there are growers of C2 Nelson on here who have sown after this date and it performed satisfactorily then by all means be guided by their experience but we would advise you sound them out on here first, to see if there are any. As this autumn has been an exception I doubt if there will be many, if any at all, as most growers of Nelson over recent years would have been able to sow in a normal winter wheat drilling window.
Good luck if you decide to have a go but we thought it only right and proper to mention that we dont have any experience of how it would perform from Mid March onwards.
I can't see it would have made any difference which date you planted it - some seed drilled in March could be sat in a dry seedbed and not germinate until 2nd week of April in any event.
I hope so anyway - some was stitched in on field recently into moisture so hopefully it'll be up within 10 days or so.
Morning Steve, I’m sure you’re not suggesting that latest safe sowing dates for winter wheat are irrelevant ? In my 45 years of working in the industry I’ve a list longer than my arm of growers who regretted pushing advised late sowing dates. Of course there will always be an element of luck and good fortune involved but in terms of Plant Breeders advice I know which side of the fence I would be on and it wouldn’t be the one with my fingers crossed and wishing in hope.
That aside, good luck with your stitching in and I hope it all comes through and fills in satisfactorily for you.
I am not sure i would have a spring wheat you couldn't drill upto April as there are a lot of years you don;t seem to get much of a window to get stuff in the ground
