@Electricfencer , if you have a Beltex x Charollais it will last 2 years tops and you'll trim its feet monthly, yer doomed man, doomed. :D:D:D You would perhaps do better to keep the wee runt tup lamb that has nuts so small you couldn't ring it that will go on to impregnate half your flock when it figures out how to wriggle under the bottom wire of your fences.

How many Shetland cross tup would you like? You'll never need to touch their feet, mainly cos you can't catch the fückers.

He seems pretty good at the moment. Never went lame or lost condition in the winter. I used him on 120 ewes (3 groups of 40 back to back tupping). I know about tups who can get out, I buy 3 welsh tup lambs off my neighbor every November to tup welsh draft ewes, but I have to kill them at the end of the first cycle because no way will they stay put once there aren’t 20 ewes to tup a day. 😂

Why do you need the Welsh pure?

Just joining this thread but we went down the road of texels quite a few years ago moving away from Suffolk’s. Run one Suffolk again now and although he never carries much flesh he throws some good lambs with good feet. Crossing him to a few mules and some 3/4 texels. Had a texel tup again this morning with texel throat and had more than one in last couple of years. It seems to be coming an issue

We get the point, the Char are the best breed and everything else has a defect, this record keeps on playing.

Again, I haven’t promoted a Charollais to the op on this thread. All breeds have weak points, and breeders should identify, and try to address them.

Are you suggesting that longevity isn’t generally lacking in Beltex sheep? It’s certainly a rarity to see a ram in the mart cull line...
