Depends a bit on how many other companions you are putting in and at what rate. Last year i went at 3.5 kg/ha berseem with 7 kg/ha buckwheat and 65 kg/ha sp beans

We have 2.5kgs h/a of berseem 15 kgs/ha vetch 6kg/ha buckwheat and I think the rape worked out at 1.9 kgs . There's a bit more berseem there if it would be beneficial to put a bit more in .

This year drilled 5kg OSR, 8kg buckwheat and 4kg Berseem clover all mixed, waiting to see what comes. Last year did same rates but broadcast Berseem clover with Avadex spreader on the rolls as all received wisdom said clover wouldn't like being drilled but the only place it grew was where the combine had turned and left no straw. My thinking was as my confidence in the Simtech grows that at least the clover will be in contact with the soil and my limited experience, this is my second year, with the Simtech seems to show the depth setting not that important within reason; it seems to create a slot free of straw with seed and tilth mixed and the seed grows. I will keep you posted.

If I were to plant berseem clover with oats as a cover to provide a grazing before maize, would it be better to use winter or spring oats, wouldn't really matter? One sample may flow through the drill easier than the other without cleaning that's all

Micheal what does your rape look like at the moment.
I used the same mix of companion crops as you, all coming up but rape looks like it’s been shot with a 12 bore

I have some shot-holing, but in odd patches. There maybe the odd bare patch but I have a crop. What I would say at this relatively early stage is that next year I will only use the buckwheat. Having tried berseem clover both drilled with the rape this year and broadcast off the back of the rolls last year the clover establishment is disappointing.
