My nephew is looking to buy his first car in next few months when he's passed his test and is now wondering what car to get.
Ive suggested a little 4x4 like Freelander, safer on country roads as better visability, and better suited for dealing with potholes, floods and snow
Budget is around £4k
Also must have "street cred!"

Something like a Freelander will be uninsurable for a new driver. Unless someone is illegally fronting the insurance, he will be stuck with only the most modest cars.
That does not make them any less safe these days. The Euro safety standard tests progressively get tougher with every passing year, so a new fiesta will in actuality be safer than a 14 year old Freelander.
There is a couple of young lad's I know that as newish drivers find it cheaper to lease a new car with the insurance included, than it would be for them to insure their own car.
