Freehand on the bench grinder for drill bits that don't need an ultra accurate grind on them, Brierley for those that do.

Have a Brierley sharpener at work. Good tool,easy to use and accurate.

But if needed and not after total accuracy then free hand on bench grinder

Some drills have a non standard flute spiral, my 350x does not do my dorma bits very well, there the ones with gold colour rather than black, the flue/spiral is i guess more aggressive at removing swaff faster. that means the drill doctor sharpens it all at the wrong angles no matter what you do with it.

Thanks that makes sense. It wasn't hitting the wheel at the right angle and wasn't lining up properly at all like it was either twisting to fast or to slow can't remember now. Will try again with different bits.
