So what is the best flat eight bale grab , thinking for the future can it do midi sized bales too?
All much of a muchness no? Some, such as Albutt, do a heavy duty version that should be fairly future proof. Depends if you want a side bar as well because I don't know as they all are designed to have one.

Had a Brown from the 1960s , don't use it now but the Cook looks far superior with opposing tines so bales don't slip off on rough ground.

I've had both, Browns suited me better, less bales slipping, also shallower back plate so less soil contamination.

I accept may be some hook wear in my cooks. Dealer advice in 1986 was Cooks sledge & Browns grab, I'd say that was good advice.

That was 40 years ago the newer ones should be better Cherry, Allbut & Kuhns. Will choose one over the winter. Invested in 2 nd loader tractor so would like one for the barn & one for the field.

Am I being thick or are we talking about grabs designed for a tractor-loader or a telehandler? In my tiny mind the respective grabs for these are often rather different?
olly grab to pick bales up 4 side by side 2 long 8 bales
browns 🥵 cooks or farmhand superior
will take you a pic of the heavy duty bale loader in yard ❤️ if field smooth little massey is far better than jcb

If picking Welgar bales up grab needs to be slightly longer if you want to pick any cross way to load trailer
Yep, Moulton do one. They very rarely slip a bale. Just have to be a little bit careful on the cut tines rather than cast ones as they can cut strings if you're not lined up right. Will happily run 3 4 stringers or two six stringers all day too.

I'm told that grabs with opposing tines are better. We have a Cooks but I haven't used it yet, I'm told the Tanco is better.

We had a tanco grab back when we used to make small bales.

It seemed to work ok, it was happier when you lifted the 8 the same way as they came out of the sledge, ie 2 bales pushing against each other. When you tried to cross them it didn't seem so good, you could occasionally loose a bale or 2 when going over a bump.!
