Best fluid / way to stop padlocks freezing?

On shed locks here we keep the water out of them. We have made covers out of plastic cans that can be fitted over them.

I used to use engine oil and they froze and got mucky, using WD40 they have been fine

Silicone based lubricants last longer than WD40. The trick is to exclude the water in the first place.

Otherwise you need to carry one of these

I have got something similar , great as long as I don’t leave it in the shed with the frozen padlock

A lot of the high country gates in NZ have cheese/muttoncloth wrapped around the padlocks to help keep the moisture external.

Even with freezing fog etc the rags help keep them fairly dry and if they're well lubed up with CRC/WD40 type penetrants they seem to work fine, cut down bottles etc do not 'keep the air out' to the same extent

Throw them in a drum of diesel for 20 mins, stops them freezing.

If it’s cold enough to freeze a lock, I’m not inclined to activate the Pee Option.

Be very careful of peeing on a car door lock if you are suddenly disturbed by a female dogwalker at 6am on a winter's morning who wants to stop for a chat. After standing right next to the car to cover my predicament it was quite painful to move off again.

I've just washed out a disc type lock. I couldn't believe the amount of sludge that came out, no wonder it froze up so easily.
