Best metal to use for replacement drill blades

Hi I have a old direct drill and the blades are worn. I can't seem to find replacements for them. I had some made last year but when I used it as soon as it hit anything remotely hard they bent could anyone tell me the best metal to use for making some new ones thanks. I'll put some pictures on when I get chance thanks.

You want some hardox the same metal as used on bucket tow plates

Looks an odd shape blade (edit, just realised thats a bent blade), what is the drill and what does the rest of the coulter look like?


Wear resistance steels (such as hardox) come in a range of yeild strengths. While they will resist abrasion better than typical fabrication steels, some are not much stronger to resist bending. Hardox for example you probably want a 500 or 600 version to ensure it new ones don't bend. Do you know what grade of steel the last lot were made from?

I will ring the firm tomorrow I think they called it stainless steel wear plate. I'll get some photos of the machine in the morning.. my other idea was to get some standard drill discs and get the hole cut out would that work? Or would the disc lose its strength with the hole cur out?

Sorry I cant picture where that plate goes ..........
You might have to go stainless if the old ones are shiny.
Can you go heavier than the original to keep cost down?
If they are just bending there (as in picture) can you weld an angle across the weak point (the bend)

What make of drill is it?

Heavier material if its bolted to a solid flange?
A previous post mentioned Hardox, if you can work with it and its within budget.

@atkinsonp2 do you know what spec material the previous blades you had made were and were they the same thickness as the originals?

The blades I had made where made from stainless steel wear plate I have a suspicion that it maybe what they had in rather than what they should of been made of they where the same thickness but I have no idea about the strength of metal I have been to a laser metal cutting place today with a old blade and they are going to price making them with hardox and 600 grade let's hope I don't fall over when I get a price back

Thanks I have asked for a price today for some new heavier grade and also in hardox let's see what the price comes back like

What make of drill is it?

It's called a sisis contravator. I think it's a early 80s machine I use it for over seeding horse paddocks it works really well believe it or not [emoji23]

Yes just worked that out. Sold one a few years ago.
Have you contacted sisis to see if tungsten tipped blades are available?
There's a firm in Sheffield who make blades for most of the groundcare firms. They made me so tungsten tipped flails for a scarifier. Incredibly hard wearing

Yeah tried sisis they where no help at all sadly. I don't suppose you know the name of the firm you used do you?

Up in sunny Cumbria so miles away from anywhere! I have contacted a firm called lakes laser today who seem very good hopefully better than the last firm I got them off
