Best place to find a JAP engine?

look up Internal fire museum of power, they may be able to help, and the forum there will almost certainly throw up all the parts you need for the existing engine. The J A P model 5, I think thats what you have, can be hard to start, but if set up properly they are fine. A diesel conversion may throw up more problems than it cures, not least being the extra weight, and a small high reving modern unit may be a problem to gear correctly. All in all, if it were my machine I would retain the original engine type

Well after reading everyones' comments, I decided on a compromise and have fitted a little £150 motor which carries the Villiers name and a Union Jack but probably came from Manchuria. However it starts a treat and has ample grunt until the original is refitted. That turned out to be a Briggs and Stratton ZZ from around 1943 and I have got the old one to turn and acquired the remains of a second. The modern engine is lined up for another project later on when I'll swap them back. The only real problem was fitting a flat pulley, but I found one on ebay and ground out the correct keyway with the old lathe left in our shed by a flitting tenant.
Tonight it trundled down to the plot under its own power and did a few rather wobbly furrows with the plough. I managed to free off the disc coulter and have oiled everything else that moves. I think I'll leave the bonnet off, but I perched it on top in case it rained overnight and will also have to straighten a slightly bent handlebar :)

Might I suggest to tell us you are putting it in, no sorry tucking it in at night, regardless of the reality

Putting the bonnet on in case it rains, did you ever ...........

After the teeth-shaking effort of clunking it down the road, it can sit there until tomorrow! It needs several tins of spinach just to keep the handles up in the air. Luckily after doing the brainy bit and sticking the engine on, Mrs Fred can take over the actual use of it, although she doesn't know it yet :)
