Hi, just wondering what atvs people are using for slug pelleting? I have a honda 500 but the frame and carrier is weak and keeps breaking. I dont want to go the trailed route and make a boggie and i dont want a utv as they wouldnt suit me. Just wondering what the strongest build atv is out there for this job?

I've used Honda TRX and Can Am. Neither have strong enough rear frames for the weight of a slug pelleter. The only way to get around the problem without going trailed is a sympathetic operator and lots of welding up the framework.

I was thinking of trying to source and old school atv like a big red but maybe an independant suspension with tow hitch support could be an idea, cheers for the replies

Iirc CanAms are supposed to have class leading rear rack capacity. They’re certainly more substantially built than a lot of the opposition.

If you’re doing enough acres to justify buying a quad specifically for it, then a bogey might well be the best option though.

How about a quadcrate? It seems to hang the weight off the towbar, so is unsprung and doesn't put the same level of stress onto the rack/ suspension.

I used to do a lot of contract pelleting.

I found the Suzuki Eiger 400 rack to be decent and robust with no issues in 3-4 years of work. I always have had the pelleter on a plywood base with a polyurethane sheet to keep the dust off me (and the bike). I think the base may have removed point loading on the frame a bit...

I did have a couple of Grizzly's too, teh 600 was an animal and rather ludicrous, but pulled a 600l Logic bogie mounted sprayer well, at a fuel cost mind... The rear frame/back end worried me, so I created a small bracket, and used a bike rear shock absorber to take the load down to the drawbar. It made for a semi rigid back end, but no sag and lasted 2-3 years before I sold it.

I have a farr quad , Chinese and don't think they make them now, but it has a stronger rack than the previous Honda and we welded a couple of lengths of steel to the draw bar. When this is worn out I am going to get a Suzuki jimny, step as much weight out and put some wide wheels on. When your knees don't bend after 2hrs spreading in the winter ,its time for a cab.

To be honest, if teh OP went for a bogey, it will cost peanuts to build. A single lightweight ATV type axle and wheels, and a steel frame for the pelleter.

I did see a quad at the highland show a few years ago with no carrier on the rear but it had a bed something like the 6x6 polaris but it was 4x4 was looked very nimble but i cant recall the name or make. What about the diesel polaris? Anyone any experience with them?

The tubing that carries the rear tail lights on claas senator combines and some of the small, older dominators is perfect size to fit inside the honda frame that the rear carrier fastens to and when welded in place will cope with anything a gamekeeper can load it with!
I use a Honda foreman for slug pellets/grass seed. Pelletor is bolted to a sheet of ply and theres a rubber mat between carrier and ply wood. Nothings cracked or broken yet...
