Looking for a complete new separator system, which is the best too look at? There are plenty of different makes out there I just want the most reliable most well built one that I don’t have to mollycoddle all winter to keep working.

Will be separating sawdust and wasted TMR from dairy cow slurry. (Not looking at changing bedding to RMS)

Bauer.
Apart from pulling the pump out once a year to check there is no plastic blocking it, pulling the screens out and hosing them off once a year (because, why not) and a couple pumps of grease every other week we have not touched ours.

Time clock turns it on about an hour after milking has started to start clearing the channels and turns it off again an hour later, we can manually turn it on and off if we need to or set other working time frames, but an hour per day is about right for us.

We toyed with the idea of having it on for an hour over night but we like the idea of someone being around just to make sure it’s working as it should, so who ever is doing the yards notices it working rather than ending up with loads of slurry backed up should something not work.

Hopefully I can be excused for hijacking thread. I have a Fan separator ( Bauer are Fan painted green) . Not had a great deal of use, (about 2 yrs) together with pump, mixer and control panel. For sale for not a lot of money, pm me if anyone interested and wanting further information.

What is the difference (apart from colour) between the Bauer and fan? I see online they are the same company.

Bauer separators are an agricultural spec of the FAN machines. FAN have a number of features designed to make them adaptable to various applications within industry / AD / Abattoirs etc. FAN developed the screw press concept in the early 90's and were bought by the Bauer group and incorporated into the Bauer family. Green bedding separators are an FAN product due to their development history with FAN in the US.

Bauer and FAN machines use the same screens and basic augers, although FAN have a number of options on augers for more demanding or "difficult" products. FAN separators include oscillators, split bodies, body extensions, mouthpiece extensions, pneumatic mouthpieces, etc, etc. ., which allow for customisation for different markets and different products. We don't just separator slurry - paper pulp, livestock stomach contents, plastic, food pulp, eggs.......the list is endless :)

EYS separators are a copy of the early Bauer machines, but miss out on some of the Bauer features that are still patent protected, as stated earlier in this thread they are a budget copy of older technology.

For general farm slurry separation, Bauer (green) are the machine to go for, but we can down spec. an FAN to bring them down to Bauer price if you prefer the blue and grey colour scheme :)

On a serious note - if you would like more info on either FAN or Bauer separators drop me a message, or give me a call. I'm more than happy to talk through options and give advise - no high pressure selling here.

Remember to take into account running costs, we have green bedding fan separator. Two screens heavy duty screen replaced every 4-5months at 3k and back screen replaced after 3years usage. Replaced both at same time 8k

Running costs of a green bedder are very different to a standard separator due to the increased pressure in the end section. Also running hours are very different as a bedding separator on average will do around 15 cubes per hour, at 11kw, in comparison to a 655 doing 25 cubes per hour at 5.5kw.

Be very wary of anyone who try’s to sell Green Bedding as Free Bedding - you don’t get anything for nothing ! But you do have to look at the realistic cost of your existing bedding, and also the advantages of GB, cleaner cows, longer laying times, reduced hock sores, no dust etc. also consider that if you are already looking at installing a separation system the additional cost to go down the bedding route is not such a big increase over a standard system.

We've green bedded for over 10 years now. Ticks all the boxes regarding cow comfort and cleanliness etc, there's alot of bed management but it is more than an acceptable trade off for the cow comfort. It is a good machine, though like others running costs are high, you are better to ask people who have them in and there will be many to ask what running cost are between electric, screen replacement auger replacement or resurfacing. The front screen of our separator is a heavy duty screen but was said to last 18months plus by the person selling it in fact it is 4-5months for ourselves Better to make an informed decision by speaking to as many people who have them and not the sales pitch.

I can’t argue with any of the above. Screen wear is a little subjective, we estimate between 2 and 3000 hrs but if you’re pushing hard for 40% DM wear will be significantly higher than if you are running at 35% on mattresses.
