Best tine drills for cover crops?

Plus one for Horsch co. with dutch, gen, metcalfe or bourgault openers...(you pays your money and makes your choice!) I fitted leading discs with complete sucess. (you will need to move the radar behind the wheel too if in high covers.

Just stumbled on this for anyone wanting to put discs on a sprinter/CO. Metcalfe do them but not sure if the Kiwi Agronomy chap has made them fit the sprinter/CO or they come standard like that…either way; looks a very fine solution…

Only comment I have (having used mine for 2 seasons in all conditions, chopped straw and covers) is that a simple hydraulic system for lowering raising discs is a big advantage. Some conditions dont need discs at all (especially on v curvy headlands); chopped straw needs discs pushed hard down. And it is pretty easy to make them hydraulically adjustable when making up the frame.

Options for leading discs

I`m looking to adding leading discs to my co4 to reduce disturbance. What options do i have? I like the simplicity of the leading discs on the Mzuri rezult, but are they strong enough for the job? The Yetter ones look good, but pricey. Are there other supliers of straight discs that i should...

There is no substitute for lots of space between each tine. I found the disc lacking when I had a simtech on demo in one field, where I recon the ground was too soft for the discs to cut wiry stems against. It was managing, but kept building up between the close banks of tines.

My current tine drill in on 214mm rows with the tines spread over 3 banks, 700mm apart. It can still block up in severe conditions but I have also used it to drill into a cover crop when the unidrill kept blocking up and also drilling across oat swaths after they had been rained on for over a month. I expect a CO with even more space between the tines would be better.

As a qucick fix, remove every other tine from the TS and block the outlets to those on the distributor head. I recall they are on 125mm tine spacing as standard so with every other removed they would be similar to a CO with narrow points on 250mm rows.

Unidrill/Easydrill is very bad in terms of trash flow. No room between the row units.
This comes from 1 year EasyDrill owner. The row units should be arranged on two beams.

Only time I have had an issue between coulters on the same drag arm was when a rock just ther right size and shape would get wedged between the coulter tubes.

Otherwise the blocking was only an issue when the clay soils were wet enough to act like resin.

The best crop I ever planted was into OSR volunteers that were over the front axle of the tractor. On another occasion planting into a tall cover crop though it did keep block, but that was sticky soil and the blockages were fiberious stems getting stuck together, uprooted and baled up between press wheels on different drag arms. I expect a newer model with staggered press wheels should avoid that and the discs were coping with those conditions fine.


Trash certainly varies, just like soils and the weather.
