Back then we had a 1988 2wd mf399 with 3 stick box - great performer, but cab a bit basic.
I'd be looking at Ford 6610, jd 2140 or case 844, were I in your shoes.
 
Ford 7840, getting near on 100hp for not a lot of money and if you get the SL model there is literally not a lot to go wrong apart from the clutch spring breaking once in a while, I’ve got one with near 20,000 hours on and it doesn’t miss a beat

. Or just go over board and buy a 5130 maxxum syncro, bomb proof, grip like hell, and reletivley cheap
