I find the first day setting traps most time consuming!! As they dont all go 'off' after that so your only moving a fraction of traps each day after that! But dam is it addictive!!

Yeah its addictive, like gambling have we got him or not (breaks the boredom of working on your own) !Mole in the hole! OH and i would say that just winding the dogs up, usually ask the dogs.. have we got him, we got the mollllllleey? and the dogs dig the trap out then attack it if there is one:ROFLMAO: (problem is turn round and they dug the trap out youve just set:banghead:) one dog started catching them on the surface runs were i'll see her half way down the field stud on one leg about to pounce.

Any tips on catching the last few moles on the farm that seem to know every which way to not get trapped!

I've caught moles successfully over the years but I've two places where hey have a stronghold! I'd guess from experience there could be no more than 10-15 moles at each stronghold.

I cannot catch any here..... They are setting the traps off on the whole but usually just stuffed up with soil or now and then gone under the trap. I've tried all my tricks to baffle them! Driving me mad now. Using mainly scissor traps and tunnel traps.

Put into context I'll have caught 49 so far this last year, year before 90odd, year before 120odd, year before 170odd. I'm clear of them on 95% of the farm just these last few wise ones....

I'm tempted by the shotgun but not often enough time to do it and I've never had the need to before

Any help/advice?

I find the lasses the hardest to catch, have they dug nests? Maybe in a couple of months you could destroy the nests when they have had young ones. Not much good i know. I have a few moles which are canny like that, really is a pain to waste time on them. If it was just a couple then you could sit on a chai and wait for them to dig and shove a spade through the tunnel then dig them out, or shot gun etc. All i do is pick one and blast them with traps, have had 6 or 8 traps all withing a few square meters:LOL: bit dispiriting if they are all filled in though.

I use barrel traps however bought a genuine Talpex trap to catch the awkward ones.

One which persistently filled the traps with soil only took two goes to catch with the Talpex.

Be careful not to get your fingers in it though, brutal.:nailbiting:

The little buggers persistance i find or bomb all the runs with traps haha

Question though how long do people leave traps down for? Leave mine a week if not triggerd and move on!
Usually a couple of days, might get up to a week if I'm in a rush but generally if they've not had anything in the first day or two I get frustrated at not catching anything and don't think they will!

ive got a very clever mole, are they better than the scissor

A hundred times more so IME. They work in a completely different way, so catch out trap fillers.
With a Talpex (there are cheap copies that are very weak) trap, you clean the run out to fit the trap, then backfill the trap with loose soil. Money thinks he's got a collapsed run so he pushes/digs through it, triggering the trap before he gets to see it. It has to have a strong Spring as it drives through that loose soil.
