Trade wins for Hamleys, Norton motorcycles and British farmers as Prime Minister Abe visits London

On top of this, it has been announced that British farmers will now be able to export beef and lamb to Japan for the first time since the two meats were banned in 1996. The total agreement is estimated to be worth around £130million over the first five years - £75m for beef and £52m million for lamb.

Has anyone have any idea if this is actually a good deal or not?

130 million is great, but if it's for goods that someone else is already giving 140 million for, it's not!

The 75 million over 5 years is about 6000 cattle per year, useful but not earth shattering.

What is more concearning is that the Eu has been running around before hand getting these deals basically out in front of us. Seems like they are making the best effort to make the B word unbearable for us unless it’s just another coincidence of course

Business works on the theory that if you're not for us you're against us, the EU will be no different.

No point being a victim

The Eu could have made these new deals at any stage but their timing is suspicious as we are approaching a time where they are necessary for us

But taking 6000 cattle off the home market can have a very significant effect if it means that there might now be a slight shortage instead of a slight surplus. Why not rejoice in a bit of good news for a change.
And that also equates to about a million good Welsh Hill lambs over 5 years , which I think equals 200,000 a year. :joyful:

As I understand it, the Japanese government has just revoked the ban on UK meat that they put in place because of BSE, back in 1996. No new EU deal, just allowing UK meat back in, and probably one of the last countries to do so.

It's another Barrier to exports removed, which is always good, but hardly a significant one in the grand scheme of things. What quantity of beef & lamb was being exported to Japan prior to 1996? I suspect not a lot. But hey, every little helps.:)

The Eu secured a trade deal with Japan in October/November similarly the Eu did other deals with America too. It concerns me as I feel they are sneaking in grabbing new trade as before we come out. Not just what we as farmers produce but other goods too. This lamb and beef deal is fantastic news! It does look obvious the game the Eu is playing though

The best bit is that lamb isn’t much cheaper from anywhere else now the gap has narrowed making the 46% wto tariffs to Eu less frightening. Note the word less!!!

The price could still be poor, which there plenty of already, so I won't be getting excited until details become clear.

I'm not sure how prices will be when competing with the worlds big suppliers like US and Oz.

I'll keep my rejoicing powder dry for now :)
