This has been talked about lots in the last few months in the plant game.these big boys rent out stuff too cheap ruining it for us owner ops.
Nick...

You won't hear many hirers complaining though. I had a brand new 14t Volvo for a full week last summer, cost me £350+Vat including haulage both ways. It was so cheap I didn't have the heart to siphon the 1/2 tank of diesel I had left before they collected it.

Fudge.My.Buffers... You couldn't rent a car for that!

That's also the rate in North Wales as well, two local large companies being very competitive on self drive kit. They must turn over a lot of money, and be heavily reliant on machines going out each week in order to turn a profit.

Its a huge shame that Hawk have gone into administration, they were a good company to deal with and employed a fair few people. From what I know, and what's been written in the press it looks like a "perfect storm" is what's created the current situation, Carillion debt, low demand for hire, finance costs. Hopefully a rescue package / new owner / investor can be found to keep the business going.

So just me who’s never heard of em
If you look at most construction sites or work on motorways etc, there will be HAWK machines . Not just tractors , but everything from diggers to dumpers.
During the last big recession, work had dried up, when a man walked into their office and offered them a massive contract in Sierra Leone , doing all the infrastructure for some big mining company . They shipped thousands of machines over there and it provided work for the men for many years.

TE Jones, took my FIL for quite a bit of money, yet couldn’t touch his personal wealth.
I grew up 100 yards from his house, dad used to drink in the same pub as him, I remember him getting a kicking by some blokes waiting for him to come out one night, the coffin they put on his doorstep was a bit much for his young, at the time, family. But yes there were a lot of very angry people about at the time

My youngest brother went out on the Sierra Leon job several times, doing the plumbing and water, but they were stuck in the tropical heat of portacabins most of the time as no parts or components arrived. Payed him well enough to build a holiday let..(y)

I can remember a Company called Venni Plant hire undercutting everyone else and putting brand new machines on every site Waste Recycling LTD had .All very nice but i think they only lasted 12 months .A local lad ended up going tits up when they were not paid for building the new surgery in town i suppose it only takes someone to pay you late and the finance on all your new shiney gear goes south .Its a tough old game plant hire these days sadly .

Constant display of new kit being displayed on social media from one of the North Wales ones. See his kit all over the place... All shiny all mostly out on work makes you wonder about the effects of a slowdown or bang further down the chain.

When they built the A55 there were a lot of Hawkins kit on there. 4x4 AP Cabbed 7610s were in abundance on that job.

Things haven’t changed much, plenty of story’s going around about people with a score to settle, apparently had his son kidnapped and roughed up, had to pay if he wanted to see him again.
Know people who have done work for him, or more to point companies he owns but not in his name, they don’t get paid.
He also went bust after F&M in 2001, again many stories surrounding that but was soon back up and running.
They have a small ad in farmers weekly every week if you know which one to look for.

0.5% profit margin at one part of the company in 2017 and a 1% loss at the other major part, and that's in good times. Is it any wonder a debt with Carillion was enough to send them over the edge ?

There used to be stories going around of diggers been buried to hide them unless that was a different kind of plant

The fact that the cost of the equipment has doubled in the last 10 years has nothing to do with it then ?
Oh well, just me then...........
I was thinking the same thing today. The cost of new tractors and machines has got out of hand, compared to hire fees and what can be made from using them on farms . And yet sales people look at you with bewilderment when you point this out.
